- Air Vent Passage Way: Several episodes feature characters crawling around in vents.
- Cast Full of Gay: the majority of characters are queer in some way, this is partially explained by the fact that facing discrimination based on your identity builds mental protections. This would make queer people generally more qualified to work at the Department of Variance.
- Dislikes the New Guy: At first Scarlet is annoyed that she is going to have to train Jasmine.
- Eldritch Location: The Department of Variance is one of these, as well as possibly the entire state of Ohio.
- Hell Is That Noise: The birdsong.
- Mortal Wound Reveal: In season 1 episode 14, Sterling Proof is shot, at the end of season 2 episode 7, it is revealed that the wound is almost certainly going to kill him.
