Basic Trope: A character says a popular phrase only to subvert it midway.

  • Straight: Bob states that "I keep my friends close and my enemies far away".
  • Exaggerated: "I keep my friends close and I don't have enemies".
  • Downplayed: "I keep my friends close and my enemies close enough to keep an eye on."
  • Justified: Bob is actually arguing against the cliche — he does not mean to win over his enemies, just prevent them from harming him.
  • Inverted: Bob starts out saying the phrase wrong before correcting himself.
  • Subverted: Bob gets interrupted midway through by someone assuming he'll subvert it, but he actually says it normally.
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • "I keep my friends close and my enemies closer".
    • Bob avoids stock phrases.
  • Enforced: The Producers note "I keep my friends close and my enemies closer" is not in character for Bob to say.
