Basic Trope: A point in a video game where Level Grinding is required in order to successfully continue.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia XV, a severe Difficulty Spike occurs midway through the game. The previous boss is level 20, but the next is level 30 with matching stats and higher level abilities. You will need to grind your party 5-10 levels in order to stand a chance.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: You need to grind 2-3 levels.
  • Justified: The Big Bad obtains an Upgrade Artifact and his newfound power spreads to his minions, making them stronger as well.
  • Inverted: Anti-Grinding
  • Subverted: While the boss is level 30, its stats and abilities are underpowered, meaning you can still defeat it without grinding.
  • Double Subverted ...but the rest of the bosses after do have appropriate stats and abilities to wipe the floor with your party if you don't grind.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: Through clever application of strategy and tactics, you can defeat the boss without grinding. However, every boss after is equally strong and acquiring all of the weapons, spells, and items you need to take advantage of their weakness and beat them without grinding takes far longer than simply grinding would be.
  • Averted: Level Scaling
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: Once you've gained half of the levels you need to advance, party member Quirby states "it's bullshit that we have to train so much harder for this next guy. It isn't even that fun!"
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Deconstructed: Players stop playing Tales Of Troperia XV and hammer it with bad reviews since the grinding required bogs down the game's pace and bores the hell out of the players.
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played for Laughs:
  • Played for Drama:
