Basic Trope: A character is Locked Up and Left Behind in a hostile environment to die.

  • Straight: Bob has been left out in the middle of the desert to die tied to stakes.
  • Exaggerated: Professor Evil takes Bob to a tidally locked planet, strips Bob naked, and leaves Bob tied on the side permanently facing the sun.
  • Downplayed: Bob is left tied to a tree in a temperate forest.
  • Justified: Professor Evil is a Sadist who wants revenge on Bob for all of the scenes he has foiled.
  • Inverted: ???
  • Subverted: Professor Evil has his minions bring out just enough food and water to keep Bob alive, causing perpetual torture.
  • Double Subverted: Professor Evil’s minions leave food and water beside the helplessly bound Bob, just out of his reach, to taunt him.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob is tied down in the desert, but escapes into a cool castle, where a giant magnifying glass aimed at the sun vaporizes him.
  • Averted: Professor Evil takes his captive Bob out of the desert to a regular torture chamber.
  • Enforced: Professor Evil stations guards around Bob to make sure he cannot escape his fate.
  • Lampshaded: “Hope his men aren’t going to tie me up out in the middle of the desert like in an old movie.”
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Professor Evil uses Bob’s cruel and unusual death to detour minions from disobeying him.
  • Defied: Bob escapes on the trip out to the Thirsty Desert.
  • Discussed: This exchange:
Bob I was left there tied for five days.
Alice: You couldn’t have survived that long.
  • Conversed: "Sooner or later, Bob's gonna be set free somehow. He's The Hero, of course!"
  • Implied: Bob disappeared after he last went to battle Professor Evil, but he returns five days later with a great tan.
  • Deconstructed: Bob’s muscles is aching and needs to use the bathroom by the time he is rescued.
  • Reconstructed: Professor Evil knows the previous will happen.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice and Bob bicker about the mess Bob has gotten them into. Carol eventually pipes up to remind them to focus on getting out of there.
  • Played for Drama: Bob was rescued from being tied in the Thirsty Desert, but he was tied spread eagled so long he can hardly walk. The other characters have to help him.
  • Played for Horror: The team finds multiple skeletons, picked dry by animals of various kinds and tied to wooden stakes in the Thirsty Desert.
