Basic Trope: A gravestone without the dates of birth and death.

  • Straight: Bob's gravestone simply says "R.I.P Bob", with no indication of when he was born or when he died.
  • Exaggerated: Not a single grave has a date on it anywhere.
  • Downplayed: Only one of the two numbers is missing.
  • Justified:
    • The gravestone is damaged near the bottom, so the part where the dates would have been is now blank.
    • Bob died trying to unite two warring factions that each used a different year numbering system, so to honor his memory, the morticians decided to use neither system on his gravestone, as well as putting it exactly on the border between territories.
    • The Mr. Smith gravestones are only style demos.
    • Nobody actually knows when Bob was born or died.
  • Inverted: An unknown gravestone shows the birth and death dates of the individual it resides above, but not their name.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: The epitaph reads: "R.I.P. BOB, WE DON'T KNOW WHEN HE DIED BUT HE DIED"
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: There is no gravestone.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: In order to simulate Yet Another Christmas Carol and make Alice believe she's in her own terrible future, Bob takes her to the grave of someone with her exact full name, knowing the dates won't give the ruse away.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
