Playing With / Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like

Go To

Basic Trope: A rescued person complains about the manner of their rescue.

  • Straight: Bob saves Alice from being attacked by a man and she yells at him.
  • Exaggerated: Bob has never once rescued someone without getting sued, beaten up, exiled, or yelled at.
  • Downplayed: Bob helps Alice fight a man and she grumbles a bit about it.
  • Justified:
    • Alice prides herself on her competence and having someone jump in to defend her embarrasses her.
    • Alice was laying a trap for the man who attacked her and Bob just ruined it.
    • While Bob did manage to rescue Alice, his carelessness or incompetence got her injured needlessly.
    • Bob just ruined the shot.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob saves Alice and she thanks him profusely.
    • Alice, the perennial Damsel in Distress, complains that she could have been captured in a less embarrassing way.
  • Subverted: Bob saves Alice from the man, and she says, "Hey!"...but it turns out she was angry that her attacker got away with her wallet, as otherwise she would have rewarded Bob for his help.
  • Double Subverted: ...But then she notices that Bob accidentally broke something else of hers during the rescue and goes ballistic on him.
  • Parodied: Bob saves Alice from a burning building. Alice complains that she wasn't rescued fast enough, so Bob puts her back in the building.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: No one saves anyone else
  • Enforced: The author is fond of the Hero with Bad Publicity trope.
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: Look what you did! If you hadn't gotten in the way, he wouldn't have escaped with my MacGuffin!
    Bob: You're welcome.
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz starts a smear campaign against Bob, making the people likelier to snap at him regardless of whether he just saved their lives.
  • Exploited: Evulz tries to convince Bob to sell Alice out to him by claiming that "she barely wanted to be rescued" and pointing out that Bob deserves more respect.
  • Defied: Alice is irritated about some things, yes, but she keeps herself in check and decides to focus on the fact that her life was saved.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Bob decides to not rescue people anymore, sick of their ungratefulness.
  • Reconstructed: Bob decides that from now on he will continue to rescue people but also angrily lecture them if they don't thank him afterwards. He's intimidating enough that most of them gibber out apologies and go on to become much more grateful people.
  • Implied: Bob rescues Alice offscreen, and then the two of them are seen angrily bickering about Bob's fighting skills.
