Playing With / Apothecary Alligator

Go To

Basic Trope: A magic-user's place has a stuffed crocodilian hanging from the ceiling, solely for Rule of Cool.

  • Played Straight: Alyssa has in her alchemy shop a taxidermy alligator hanging from the rafters.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every alchemist, wizard, witch and assorted practitioner of unusual trades has a stuffed reptile hanging from their ceiling.
    • Alyssa has a herpetology textbook's worth of taxidermied reptiles hanging from her rafters — an alligator, a crocodile, an iguana, a monitor lizard, a few types of snakes, a basilisk...
  • Justfied:
    • Alligators if not crocodilians in general in the setting contain magic properties that are useful to wizards.
    • Alyssa uses the alligator via reanimation as a guard/attack dog should enemies get in there.
  • Subverted: The alligator starts moving, and Alyssa starts yelling "Albert! Get down here!" Turns out that was her (live) pet that got loose.
  • Double Subverted: Albert is a reanimated specimen and isn't technically alive.
  • Inverted:
  • Played for Drama: Thanks to overexploitation from wizards, alligators are an endangered species.
  • Played for Horror: Alice is a Serial Killer of Lizard Folk.
