Basic Trope: An Alternate History where the Americans fail to obtain their independence.

  • Straight: The British win The American Revolution, and the US remains a British colony.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: The US remains part of the British Empire, but become effectively independent over time.
  • Justified:
    • George Washington is never born.
    • The British give the Thirteen Colonies representation in parliament, preventing the Revolution from gaining enough popular support.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: British forces put down the American Revolution, but another revolution follows shortly afterwards, and secures independence.
  • Double Subverted: The other revolution is also crushed.
  • Parodied: The British retaining control of America causes every American to be an over-the-top British stereotype/caricature.
  • Zig Zagged: The British crush the American Revolution, but another revolution breaks out later and secures independence. The British then eventually reconquers America, then America wins independence again...
  • Averted:
    • The American Revolution succeeds.
    • In this Alternate History, Europe never colonizes the Americas.
  • Enforced: "Many Americans are patriotic when it comes to the Revolution. Let's shock them and make our Alternate History about a world where it was defeated!"
  • Lampshaded: "Welcome to America! We're a proud part of the British Empire!"
  • Invoked: British time travelers from the future went back in time to the American Revolution and brought modern technology along with them to give to the Redcoats, hoping that they would use it to crush the Revolution.
  • Exploited: A descendant of a British Loyalist uses time travel to prevent the American Revolution to improve his family's status.
  • Defied: American patriots follow the British time travelers back in time to stop them from preventing the American Revolution.
  • Discussed: "Wait, didn't we gain independence? Because the Union Jack is flying from all the flag poles."
  • Conversed: "What is it with all the "British crushing the Revolution" stories!"
  • Implied: In a story where the British Empire dominates the world, the "American colonies" are mentioned while the United States are never brought up.
  • Deconstructed: Due to the difficulties in governing vast swathes of a foreign continent, North America eventually becomes independent during decolonization.
  • Reconstructed: North America is granted autonomy, but still remains under the British crown and is diplomatically tied to Britain proper.
