Basic Trope: Someone becomes a lot crueler after suffering from some sort of illness/injury.

  • Straight: Bob has a severe illness and is much meaner to people than he used to be.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob develops a nastier personality every time he's sick/injured, even if it's just a minor ailment such as the common cold.
    • Bob was formerly an All-Loving Hero, but he becomes outright physically aggressive because of his ailment.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • Bob is in pain or is otherwise extremely miserable because of his ailment, and lashes out at people because of this.
    • Bob's ailment affects his mental capacities (such as a brain injury, or Alzheimer's disease/dementia), and causes him to not realize what kinds of behavior are inappropriate.
  • Inverted: Bob becomes a much nicer person as the result of his ailment.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: Every time Bob gets an ailment as minor as the flu, he becomes a hilariously over-the-top Card-Carrying Villain who engages in Cartoonish Supervillainy, and then immediately goes back to normal after recovering.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Bob is meaner due to his ailment, but sometimes he acts normal or even nicer than usual.
  • Averted:
    • Bob doesn't become meaner after suffering any sort of ailment.
    • Bob doesn't suffer any ailments at all.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Bob uses his ailment as an excuse for his cruel behaviors.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob avoids being mean to people because of his ailment; even if it occasionally causes him to act Innocently Insensitive, he apologizes in those instances.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Because Bob is now such a jerk, his friends ditch him, leaving him to suffer alone.
