Basic Trope: A character named Mary or a variant/derivative of it is pure, angelic, goodhearted, or has otherwise religious motifs, often alluding to the Virgin Mary.
- Straight: Marie is the Token Religious Teammate and an extremely kind and motherly person.
- Exaggerated: There are several Maries, all of whom are Incorruptible Pure Pureness.
- Downplayed: Marie is the Token Good Teammate among the villains.
- Justified: Marie's parents named her after the Virgin Mary, and raised her to live up to her namesake.
- Inverted: Marie is a mean-spirited villainess who spurns the Church.
- Subverted: Marie is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, playing up the image of a sweet and nice girl in order to fool everybody into doing her bidding...
- Double Subverted: ...That was someone else impersonating Marie; the real Marie really is as nice as she initially appears.
- Parodied: Naming your daughter some variant of "Mary" instantly ensures they'll grow up nice.

- Marie isn't particularly nicer or more religious than anyone else.
- There are no characters named Mary of variations/derivatives thereof.
- Enforced: The editor tells the writer that the religious character isn't obviously religious enough, and that the writer should rename her.
- Lampshaded: "Marie's as nice as her name sounds."

- Marie's parents were very religious and raised her the same way. They named her with the Virgin Mary in mind.
- When posing as a saintly young woman for a mission, Alice uses the alias Marie.
- Exploited: When Marie threatens a Face–Heel Turn after some trauma, Bob talks her down by reminding her of her namesake.
- Defied: "I'm not going to act nice just because my name is Marie!"
- Discussed: "If we were in a movie, Marie would be that nice religious girl based on her name."
- Conversed: "Hey, who's the new character in Troper City"? "It's a girl named Marie." "Ah. I bet she's nice based on her name."
