Nightmare Fuel / West Side Story (2021)

Go To

  • In the original film, Baby John gets no more than a cut on his ear after the fight in the prologue. Here, he has a nail driven through his earlobe.
  • Riff's general demeanor throughout the film is very disturbing to watch and it often comes across that he's a Death Seeker who wants to be killed during the conflict so he can be put out of his misery, especially when he presses his forehead against the gun barrel.
    • The scene in which Riff buys the gun, in general, is unnerving. Even if you don't figure out that this is the gun which will kill Tony in the end, you can just feel all the damage this small revolver can do.
Abe: Fires trey eights. Makes quite a hole for a little gun.
Rory: It's loaded. You don't gotta cock it, even.
  • The rumble between the Jets and the Sharks. Everyone is armed with everything from baseball bats to chains, and it gets very intense once it escalates.
    • In this version, Bernardo's knife stays in Riff's chest after he stabs him and the audience is treated to long shots of it sticking out.
    • In the middle of it all, Chino is only clutching Bernardo's body, clearly terrified of the violence happening around him.
  • Tony's fistfight with Bernardo. Up until then, Tony has been avoiding violence, wanting to not go down the same path he was on before he went to jail. But now, we see just what he's capable of when push comes to shove, and he's able to put Bernardo, a skilled boxer, on the ground.
  • Seeing Chino going from a sweet, dorky guy to someone hellbent on avenging his best friend.
    • Hell, his whole shellshocked expression when he goes to tell María what happened. You can just see the moment he snaps when María innocently asks if Tony is okay.
  • Tony and Riff fighting over the gun during "Cool," not to mention Riff's completely unhinged dance at the end of the song. And just before that, Riff was using it like a toy, "shooting" his fellow Jets. During the entire scene, it feels like you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop and have the gun accidentally kill someone.
  • Anita enters María's room just as Tony is climbing out the window. The look on her face makes it clear that if she were any closer, she would have killed him right then and there. He wisely gets out while he can.
  • The attempted rape of Anita. Even the Jet girls, who are just as bigoted as their boyfriends, are horrified when their harassment of her turns sexual and try to stop it, only to get thrown out of the shop and are forced to watch from outside.
    • In the original film, a Dark Reprise of "America" is played while the Jets assault Anita. In this version, they turn on the jukebox and play the "Mambo" from the dance, adding to the chaotic nature of the scene.
