Nightmare Fuel / Mr. Jones (2019)

Go To

  • Life in Stalinist-era Moscow. People can die with no warning, and everyone is spied on constantly.
  • Once Gareth boards a train to Ukraine and gradually discovers the famine raging there, the film becomes a sort of horror movie with no supernatural element.
    • Gareth absent-mindedly drops the peelings of his orange on the floor of the wagon. Several of the passengers rush to pick them up and eat them.
    • Most characters seen during the Ukraine scenes are starving and look emaciated or diseased.
    • Frozen corpses lying in the open in various places, while bystanders casually walk around them.
    • A cart filled with corpses picks one, next to a living baby, who is crying. The conductor of the cart then picks the baby, who is still crying, and puts them on the pile of corpses.
    • Starving Ukrainian children surround Gareth and sing (with a dissonant calm tone) a creepy song about Stalin being the organizer of this tragedy, and people eating their children after turning mad because of starvation. In a later scene, Gareth has a Sanity Slippage and hallucinates all corners of the horizon being filled with a circle of children surrounding him from afar, while the same song is played again.
    • Three children welcome Gareth to their home, cook an unspecified meat, and share this meal with him. When Gareth asks what kind of meat it is, they answer it's their brother. Gareth initially understands this as "it has been hunted by our brother", then he finds an emaciated, frozen corpse with flesh cut from his leg, and is horrified as he understands people are resorting to cannibalism (and that he himself ate human flesh).
  • The most disturbing thing about this movie? The Holodomor is a real event, and everything above is based on real things which happened during it.
