Ever since the fall of the human empire, humanity has been living at the whims of machines; machines who see no value in humanity other than labor, and will readily dispose of those who don't fit the cut. Still, some people hold value in a certain rumor, that one member of the imperial family managed to survive.

Kykka, a vagabond eking a life outside the machine's "generousity", happens to meet said royal - a girl by the name of Hanamiya Kikuhyouin. While life may be tough for her, she's managed to eke out life with the help of a small gang of children, giving them hope that one day she will free humanity.

Then her gang is annihilated, and she admits to the truth - she's actually a con artist who acted the princess. At first out of greed, but kept up the illusion due to the hope she gave the people.

Luckily she's saved by Kykka, who has the ability to harness the wills of the recently deceased into a weapon powerful enough to take down any machine - an ability granted to him by his royal blood. Kykka, you see, is the actual surviving member of the imperial family, and he strikes a deal with Hanamiya. He won't charge her for treason, but she has to keep acting the princess and become the face for the rebellion he's planning.

This show provides examples of:

  • Little Miss Con Artist: Hanamiya acts as a heroic example, pretending to be the princess to get free stuff. She later admits that she enjoyed giving people hope, which is what led to her keeping up the charade.
  • Prince and Pauper: For reasons unknown, Kykka lets Hanamiya be the princess with him masquerading as her bodyguard.
  • Propaganda Hero: Hanamiya, due to Kykka figuring she's far more likable than he is.
  • Royalty Superpower: Kykka's Death Genesis Drive, which solidifies the souls of the recently deceased to help them carry out their final wishes.
