Heartwarming / The Innocents

Go To

  • Miss Giddens is so charmed by the beauty of Bly at first she asks to get out of the carriage so she can walk the rest of the way. She looks so excited to see it all, and can't believe this will be her new home.
  • Flora waits up for her and giddily says they've all been so excited for her to come. It's so sweet the way she Squees "we will have fun together". She even takes a smaller bed in Miss Giddens's room so they can sleep close by.
  • Miles returning home. He runs through the front door and tackles Mrs Grose into a huge hug. He's not some Upper-Class Twit who views servants as beneath him; he loves his housekeeper like she was family. He also presents Miss Giddens with some flowers when they first meet.
  • After Flora's tantrum in the school room, Miss Giddens turns it around by comforting the crying girl and suggesting they pretend it's her birthday - allowing the children to dress up and put on a show for them. It turns unsettling soon after, but Miss Giddens looks like she's enjoying the performance at first.
  • In fact, if the ghosts are real, then there is something very admirable in the way Miss Giddens is determined to protect Miles and Flora. She knows their uncle failed them, Quint and Miss Jessell mistreated them horribly, and even Mrs Grose neglected them. But she'll do her best to be the family those children need.
  • Although a sad scene when Miles bluntly says he knows his uncle doesn't care about them, Miss Giddens turns it around by assuring him she'll be the family needs.
  • A Pet the Dog moment for Miss Giddens after Flora is traumatized by the lake. Rather than shunning her for scaring his sister, Miles seems like he's trying to comfort her when he visits her by the fire. If he's not possessed, it's obviously the child wanting to make her feel better. And even if he is, Miss Giddens likens it to a pendulum she could feel "swinging my way" - suggesting that Miles's love for her was enough to overcome Quint's influence somewhat.
