Heartwarming / Dirge of Cerberus

Go To

  • Vincent's warmer side coming out when he tries to encourage Reeve after the latter is despondent about the attack on the WRO headquarters, expressing how grateful he to have become part of Cloud's company.
Vincent: You aren't thinking of giving up, are you? I used to be nothing but a stone in the river of time, but three years ago, it was you and the others who taught me I had to move ahead.
    • Reeve was feeling awful about the loss of life during the attack, and doubting his abilities as Commissioner of the WRO, but he later tells Vincent that he agrees with him, and that he won't give up.
  • Shelke getting her soul back.
  • This exchange:
Lucrecia: I made so many mistakes and I hurt you so, so much. I'm so sorry... But I'm so happy you survived.
  • The single tear the crystallized Lucrecia sheds as Vincent bids her what seems to be his final goodbye.
  • Vincent telling her 'thank you' after spending most of the game thinking he was the one who needed to apologise to her. It's nice to see how both Vincent and Lucrecia have managed to shift to a more positive outlook by the end.
  • The optional dialogue with Cid qualifies. He asks Vincent to grab a drink with him after, saying that even Shera (character from the original game, now his wife) has been worried about how Vincent's doing. Even though the gang are apart, they still seem close.
  • Cait Sith, after Vincent is alarmed when 'Reeve' (really a robot) is shot, also remarks to Vincent that 'he's not a bad bloke' since he just pretends not to care but apparently cares quite a lot, and later advises Vincent to get some rest before the big battle starts.
  • While on the Shera, Shelke suggests to Vincent and Reeve that she could help guide Vincent through Deepground when they mount the attack on Midgar. Vincent and Reeve exchange a look, and Shelke is quick to deny that she's doing anything but helping for her own benefit, and her resources are limited so they shouldn't expect much anyway. Neither Vincent nor Reeve seem convinced by this, and Reeve tells her he's counting on her. She seems surprised, and says she's never been counted on before. Reeve says they could really use her help, and before he leaves he warmly tells her, "Remember, I'm counting on you."
  • A few scenes later Cid also tells Shelke he's counting on her when she volunteers to go check on the engine room, and she pauses before leaving. When she confronts Nero there, she tells him she doesn't want to let down anyone that's counting on her, and tries to keep him from sabotaging the ship despite knowing he's stronger.
    • Nero and Weiss' last moments:
Nero: (To Hojo) Silence! I'm speaking with my brother.
      Hojo: You what?
      Nero: Weiss...
      Weiss: Nero...
Nero: Let us become one. Let us come together so that none may ever tear us apart. *glomp*
Weiss: Yes, let us... Let us go to him.
      • Actually, almost everything about Weiss and Nero can be viewed as heartwarming because, as sick as Tsviets were, their relationship put them in a more human light. You can't help but feeling a bit sad for them.
  • The ending of Dirge. Shelke seems to no longer need mako treatments, and though it seems that Vincent's lost the ability to use the Chaos Form, after enduring quite an ordeal, he finally appears to be at peace with himself. He even has a faint but still adorable smile when Shelke meets up with him during the final scene. The gang also seem to have adopted Shelke, and are obviously worried and out looking for Vincent's whereabouts after the final boss.
  • There are lots of hints thorought the game that Lucrecia did care a great deal about Vincent - when Shelke compiles her data files into one, she mentions specifically that a lot of the memories she sees as the data defragments are things she experienced with Vincent in particular, and that the data seems to respond to Shelke tracking Vincent's movements, as if Lucrecia is still concerned for him. Then there are multiple times Shelke uses Lucrecia's images to express Lucrecia's thoughts more than her own, including telling Vincent she doesn't want him to die when his control of Chaos starts to slip.
  • Rosso of all people manages to get a twisted one in the Multiplayer mode. At one point, she is seen wandering in the simulator before Shelke comes in. After some sparring, Rosso asks her about the surface and the two sort of manage to share a casual conversation together. Rosso confesses her wish to get outside and see the real sky, even if she has to kill people on her way. It is oddly heartwarming because it is one of few moments where Rosso shows the closest of humanity here.
    • She gets another later, in the final scene where the Tsviets are reunited together after the player died due to Restrictor. While the others coldly say they have to find another soldier as a replacement for the player, Rosso is quite saddened about how the player worked hard only for them to die like that.
  • A twisted example but the flashback involving the exchange between Nero and Shelke at the ending of the story where Shelke is asked to find the Protomateria. While it is for a bad end, Shelke sounds quite eager to use her full capacity to help or be useful to somebody (even though the "who" is not mentioned) while Nero, who is usually despising toward others save for Weiss, is quite polite and talks to her in a gentle and respectful way. Even though we know what will happen afterward, this exchange between two killing machines is quite cordial.
