Heartwarming / Checkmate (Anla'Shok)

  • All 24 tributes in both the 2nd and 3rd Games try to refuse to fight each other until the Capitol threatens them and their loved ones.
  • The Tragic Bromance between Wolfe and Sawyer provokes many Pet the Dog moments from Wolfe and helps him develop from a budding sociopath into a Sociopathic Hero during the Games they take part in.
  • Woof paying Mags a personal visit after her stroke and giving her a fabric banner.
  • Whittle from District 9 is contemplating a suicidal act of defiance between the 3rd Quarter Quell announcement and reaping, when the only Victor he has ever mentored shows up at his door, at peace with dying and ready to spend time with him. He feels happiness at finally having a friend for the first time in decades, offers to bake her cookies, and continues to get along with her for their remaining time on Earth.
  • As horrifying as the 70th Hunger Games (where every non-Career tribute is a 12-year-old without a same sex biological sibling of reaping age to volunteer due to a sadistically rigged reaping), there are two touching moments amidst the horror.
    • One 12-year-old in District 8 still gets a volunteer, his common law stepbrother, who recalls how the boys father adopted him after his mom died despite having broken up with her some time ago.
    • After all of the older tributes besides Annie die in the first few minutes, she and the twelve-year-olds spend several days comforting each other and refusing to lift a hand against each other until the arena gets flooded.
  • Brutus thinking about his three Victors before volunteering for the Quell: the first tribute he ever mentored (who no one thought he could save without experience, but he did anyway), another who (unlike almost every Victor) is truly and fully happy and content with life, and The Baby of the Bunch, with her fondness for making snow angels.
  • Brutus killing Cecelia in a quick and bloodless way (hitting her in the neck with his sword handle) so that her children will be traumatized as little as possible during mandatory viewing.
