Headscratchers / Star Trek: The Next Generation S3E12 "The High Ground"

  • Troi panics when Geordi tells Picard to lock onto his signal and beam it outside the ship. Considering how often we see Starfleet people use their communicators to give the transport team a target to lock onto, you'd think that this would be a well-established tactic, so saying "lock onto my signal" would be an established shorthand for indicating that you're using it. At the very least, Starfleet should have a shorthand to communicate what you're doing.
    • Lock on to my signal is shorthand for locking onto the combadge in order to transport whatever the combadge is attached to. Troi panicked because she had no way to know Geordi had taken off his combadge. Maybe there'd be a reason for Starfleet to have a separate code to say "lock on to my signal, I won't be wearing my combadge at the time but I've attached it to something else" as opposed to "lock on to my signal, I'm currently wearing my combadge and need you to transport me somewhere immediately" (both of which are scenarios that could require the transporter operator to lock on to their signal). However "lock on to my signal" already covers both situations and the transporter operator can just determine what they need to transport based around what's in the proximity of the signal so it's not that there's a need (the rest of the details of what they're doing, such as transporting the object outside the ship, are things they have to explain in either case). So while you may think it'd be useful to have a second short hand for this scenario, I don't think it's really confusing/a headscratcher that there wouldn't be one.
  • The Limited Wardrobe of Starfleet personnel really sticks out here. Why wouldn't Riker and Worf change into something slightly less conspicuous considering they're about to infiltrate a terrorist stronghold by stealth?
