Headscratchers / Lou Reed

  • Why is Perfect Day from Transformer about drugs specifically? Is it just because it was on the Trainspotting soundtrack that people have come to associate it with drugs or is there something else?
    • ** 'You made me forget myself/I thought I was someone else, /Someone good". Although Lou Reed has always denied that it was about drugs, and, given that he wrote a song called 'Heroin', has no real reason to lie about this.
    • Well, according to Lou's first wife Bettye Kronstad it really was inspired by a day that they spent together, which did include a visit to the zoo, a walk in the park and movies.
    • It was written by a guy with drug issues at the time, who wrote a song called Heroin (which does not glorify narcotics, but does not condemn its use either). Plus, there is a major ambiguity in it: nothing in the lyric suggests it's specifically about a person - it might be someone you love, but it also might be about alcohol, narcotics or, say, antidepressive medication, whatever gets you thru the night.
