Headscratchers / Gretel and Hansel (2020)

Go To

  • It’s not entirely clear how witches exist. There doesn’t seem to be a Mage Species, and Gretel is implied to have an affinity for magic long before she and Hansel leave home. But is Gretel a Mage Born of Muggles, or does one have to have magical potential and make a great sacrifice to operate as a witch?
    • It seems that, like many instances in fantasy, some people are just born with a "gift" for magic, but that potential needed to be tapped and exercised for the person to really make good use of it.
  • Is the girl in the pink cap still alive or does her spirit haunt the woods where Holda lives?
    • The girl in the pink cap may have been eaten by Holda, she did say she ate her children, not just 'some' of her children. In one of Gretel's dreams she is decapitated, maybe this is how she died.
    • As far as I understood, we never find out what happened to the Beautiful Child once Holda started eating children. It's a Riddle for the Ages.
  • Why did the witch go out into the woods (towards the end of the movie, directly preceding the scene when Gretel tries to drug her with a sleeping draft) and then throw up in the hole? She says something like "when nature calls out to me I try to answer." What does that mean?
    • Well, some Witches were believed to have something of a "link" with the surrounding area, perhaps her human remains filled puke was payment about "nature" warning her about Gretel being on to her true nature.
