- Within the first chapter, Gaspard de Chalons attempts to provoke Teagan into a duel. Celene and Ser Michel play on tradition so the duel has to be fought with feathers.
- Felassen enjoys snark at everyone's expense. Including the Dalish.Briala: How are the Dalish? You have not spoken of your people.
Felassan: They have a wonderful new plan! It ends with the shemlen killing each other off, leaving the Dales free for the elves to rule.
Briala: *raises eyebrow* How does it begin?
Felassan: Riding around in wagons pulled by deer. They're still working out the middle. - One of the jokes of the novel is that Felassan will try to expound Dalish-sounding wisdom about the plants around them, before then revealing that the plant he chose isn't the one he was talking about.
- One of Felassen's first actions in the book is to pick a piece of bark off a tree and eat it, commenting that the Dalish know about types of bark which can cure migraines... before admitting that the bark he's eating is just bark. He then proceeds to spit it out and put it back on the tree.
- While examining a plant he just picked, Felassan compares Briala to a certain type of flower whose seedlings bloom after it is picked. After concluding the metaphor, he realizes that the plant he's holding is itchweed (poison ivy).
Felassan: No fascinating metaphors there.
