Fridge Horror

The miniseries basically runs on this, with the whole point being to reveal the secret horrors of the exotic animal trade.
  • How many wild animals did you see in zoos or amusement parks as a kid that were bred in conditions like those in the series, given how many of them have been sold all over the country?
  • How many of those private zoos exploited their employees behind the scenes, as Joe and Doc did at their parks?
  • Doc laughs at the idea of paying someone $3,000 to kill someone, saying that $30,000 to $100,000 would be a more reasonable price. Why is he claiming to be such an expert on the going rate of hitmen?
  • The reveal that Joe (and probably others) would breed cubs for the sole purpose of charging people to play and take photos with them, and then shoot or gas the cubs once they grew out of "play time." Any cat lover whose fondest childhood memory involves holding or getting a picture taken with a cub; now you'll lose sleep wondering what became of that cub just a few months later.
  • Joe was only caught because he was foolish enough to make his violent nature and threats public, and fall for the hit-man set-up. Likewise, if you feel Carol Baskin has things to answer for, she too was exposed to the general public only because she foolishly agreed to this documentary (not a smart move for someone accused of their husband's disappearance). Which begs the question: how many people like this are out there and going undetected, because they're smart enough to keep a low profile?
  • One of the final lines of the 8th episode implies that Joe was actually terrified of big cats, and the majority of his "Love" for them was an act. It gives any rewatches of the series a new level of horror and disgust.

Fridge Brilliance

  • Laser-Guided Karma hits the two leads hard.
    • First, Joe Exotic, whose ultimate goal was to achieve fame by exploiting caged animals. He is now famous for his horrible actions, and will most likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
    • Depending on how you feel about Carol Baskin, she too was hit with a dose of this, when she agreed to do the documentary to expose corruption in the industry, and in doing so, had her business and past presented in an extremely negative light.
