Fridge Logic for The Fold.

Fridge Logic:

  • The gate guards: there is a manned guardpost at the gate outside the San Diego site when Mike arrives. He notes that the well-trod perimeter path indicates there's at least one or two more guards. Later when buildings start exploding and the team needs firepower backup, no one thinks to call for the guards or even fill them in to run for it.
    • Well, the team specifically needed explosives, rather than firepower. It's not likely that guards have any. They probably could use the guards to help them disassemble the rings, rather than drafting Anne, but on the other hand, Anne is the one they know and — to some extent — trust, so they at least can be certain she won't do something stupid, like walk through the Door.

Fridge Brilliance:

  • The alpha predator is barely described, since it's so big that the characters can't easily see the whole thing. But it has wings a thousand feet across, fifty-foot-long tentacles dangling from its face, completely alien thoughts, and an insatiable hunger. Did they just summon Cthulhu?
    • Almost. According to the previous novel, 14, the same alpha predator was an inspiration for Cthulhu.
