Fridge Brilliance

  • During the meeting with the town residents, Magami Nankuse enjoys himself by busting out several tics which the gathering of residents imitate slavishly. We later see that these tics are ripped directly off the people Nanakuse has imprisoned. Thus, the conclusion can easily be drawn that Nanakuse's obsession with tics is not just a way of inspiring novels but also a means of manipulating others—Nanakuse clearly gets a thrill out of manipulation, as we see when he forces the protagonist into a breakdown. But what's the Fridge Brilliance? We see when Nanakuse is alone or with his assistant that he doesn't wear makeup, nor a wig, nor even the smallest article of feminine clothing. And when he goes down to his dungeon and taunts the protagonist, he's swaying badly on his heels as if unaccustomed to wearing them. Why? Because the cross-dressing is another affected tic! Nanakuse only wears feminine attire and make-up when meeting other people as a piece of deliberate eccentricity. And just like when he deliberately cracked his knuckles or stuck out his tongue at the meeting and was thrilled when everyone did the same, Nanakuse presents this massive tic when dealing with others, and enjoys how people go along with it. This also fits in with the theory the story is a wry commentary about how Ito feels regarding his fame—if he sees himself as a normal person in real life, the way he depicts himself in his own manga as a highly eccentric individual is a false persona. The difference is that Ito is trying to amuse the reader and Nanakuse is only trying to amuse himself. (Note that as this idea reflects Nanase as a male who adopts feminine traits as a deliberate affectation, I've used masculine pronouns).
