Fridge Brilliance
- Gervais will never reveal exactly what Derek's condition is - if he has one at all, and we will merely get little moments suggesting things that are then dismissed; Why? Because it would defeat the point of the character. The entire point is that maybe Derek isn't rich or brilliantly smart or attractive, but none of that matters because kindness is magic. To detail exactly what Derek's condition is would render him a character with X or a character who suffers from Y, and it would shift focus away from what is the point of the character - that those lower on the social ladder can be incredibly good people, and that people like Derek and Hannah often go unsung and unnoticed.
- This is lampshaded in an episode where Derek is offered a chance to be tested. He declines because it will not make a difference either way.
