- Lutherans drive Fords, Catholics drive Chevys. If you think of the respective companies' images, especially back when Keillor created the show in The '70s when the American auto industry was just starting the Malaise Era and for decades before, Ford was associated with Henry Ford, an iconoclast and a character in many ways while General Motors was thought of as a sprawling bureaucracy with many, many individual fiefdoms. Ford was Martin Luther, GM was the Vatican.
- It's still hard to imagine a town like that in The '70s without any Dodge Darts or Plymouth Valiants, or for that matter that none of the Norwegian bachelor farmers drove a Dodge or IH pickup.
