  • Grapploct [#853]/[#352]

Physical Description

The Clobbopus line are a line of semiaquatic Fighting-type cephalopod Pokémon which are native to the Galar region.

Clobbopus is the base form of the line. It can range anywhere from 45-75 cm tall, though usually averages around 60 centimeters, or two feet tall. The average weight is 2 to 7.5 kilograms, with many specimens weighing 4 kg. It is a creamy-white in colour and has three pairs of orange spots that run up the mantle. These dots have a noticeable ring-like pattern in the form of a small separation between the outer ring and inner spot. It has rounded blue eyes with diagonal, oval-shaped pupils and an orange mask pattern that surrounds the eye area. On the left side of its face is an orange siphon. It also has eight tentacles, six of which are relatively small and are greyish purple on the bottom, with each bearing a single orange-red suction cup. The mouth is found at the center of these tentacles, and is circular in shape. The two largest tentacles taper outwards, starting thin like the other six but then become bulbous towards the end, giving them the appearance of clenched fists. Each has a thin maroon band separating the two halves of the tentacles, the ends of which are grayish-purple and form glove-like markings. Two orange suction cups are on each of these tentacles, one smaller and one larger. The back of Clobbopus's body is largely single-coloured, save for the "glove" markings.

Grapploct is the mature form of the line. The usual size measurements for Grapploct are anywhere between 1.4 and 1.8 meters, with 1.6 being the median and most common. It weighs anywhere between 29kg to 53kg, with 39kg being what most specimens weigh. It is primarily dark blue with a dark gray underbelly colouration. It is more humanoid in shape, though is perfectly capable of swimming despite this. Grapploct's siphon is eye-level on the left side of its face, is yellow in colour, and can extend outwards when threatening or attacking, a skill unseen in Clobbopus. The eyes remain blue, though are now semi-circular and slanted downwards in a permanent glare, and the irises are black and the pupils are white. The mask surrounding its eyes is mostly yellow in colour, though has a thin light-green outline. The v-shaped line at the bottom of the face is actually the location of Grapploct's mouth, which is hard and beak-like. Grapploct's eight tentacles are usually equal in length, with three of the tentacles balancing it in the form of legs, four tentacles acting as arms, and the remaining tentacle being wrapped around its midsection like a belt. Each tentacle is dark grey all the way around the circumference of the tip and bears two yellow circular suction cups of roughly equal size. The back of Grapploct's body has several patches of the same yellow-green colouration setup as its mantle mask in various spots. The species can show surprising variation on where these markings are, with the most common setup having large patches on the back of the body, and at least one or two of the tentacles having a spot on the back.

There exists a rare colour mutation in which the Clobbopus's body is light-blue in colour and the glove markings are the creamy white colour of a normal Clobbopus's main body. They mature into Grapploct with a bright-red body and white underbelly, and orange outlines to the markings instead of light-green. Collectors are always seeking out these rare-coloured Pokémon.

Notable Biology

The Clobbopus line, as Fighting-types, employ a large variety of close-ranged and long-ranged Fighting moves which are carried out by a combination of the inner omni-sac and their powerful tentacles. Punching, slapping, strangling, constriction and crushing are possible with these appendages, and packing a lot of muscle power, they are able to break some of the sturdiest of rocks and even various watercraft with brutal swings. Their affinity for strong techniques can be attributed to multiple hearts, which serve distinct functions. Grapploct, as their name suggests, are particularly adept at grappling, and their signature technique, known as the "Octolock" maneuver, disallows its target from escaping, while softening their defenses up. They also delight in taunting targets by curling and waving their tentacles, along with wide-bodied stances and stomping of their tentacles. It is often the case that a Clobbopus mastering these techniques will mature into Grapploct, though the link between these phenomena is still not fully understood. Young Clobbopus instead specialise in wildly clobbering their chosen target, having limited grasping ability and only being able to use their suction cups alone to grasp.

Clobbopus and Grapploct are not classified as Water-type Pokémon. Despite this, they spend a lot of time in the waters of their chosen habitat, and can employ a range of Water-type techniques, both ranged and close-quarters. This includes the "Octozooka" technique, which it shares with fellow cephalopod Octillery. The siphon on Grapploct's head connects to an inner chamber where it stores water. Clobbopus instead use these for respiration and locomotion, though it is possible for them to shoot water via their mouth which connects to the water chamber. The above-mentioned omni-sac serves as a place to store mud which can be shot at full force, and also a repository for ice energy which, transferred to the water chamber via a passageway, can cool down any water and imbue its punches with ice.

The line are boneless; as a result, many of them are quite limber and can shrug off any form of paralysis, whether brought on by electrical shocks or blunt-force trauma. Some individuals also have tougher omni-sacs and water chambers which can allow them to more forcefully launch weaker techniques and at more power, though seemingly at the cost of some of their flexibility and adding a susceptibility to paralysis. Scientists sometimes colloquially dub these individuals as "Technicians", and Technician Clobbopus/Grapploct are the focal point of many scientist studies that attempt to understand Pokémon biology on a base level.

The tentacles of the line are prone to being pulled off, though they can re-grow them and thus, they are not too alarmed when this happens. Most tentacle pulling happens during fights. Travelling over land is when most of their fights happen. When moving over land, Grapploct crawl along on their top and bottom tentacles if they need to move quickly. Otherwise, they only move along on the bottom tentacles, apart from the one wrapped around their midsection.

Habitat

Clobbopus and Grapploct are found in bays and seafronts, having a particular preference for colder waters. Galar's Route 9 is where most of these individuals are spotted, although a few Grapploct have occasionally been sighted around the Wild Area, particularly the Lake of Outrage and West Lake Axewell. Sightings note various weather conditions, which suggests that Grapploct are particularly hardy.

Grapploct have occasionally been reported showing up around the waters of various other regions, though usually only on the edge and around the oceans, which suggests a limited ability to migrate when the native waters are at a disagreeable temperature and pH value.

Diet

Clobbopus and Grapploct's diet is fairly narrow and shelled Pokémon comprise much of it, though some plants and immature Pokémon in its diet are land-based, and a Clobbopus on land is looking for food most of the time. Grapploct and Golisopod are ferocious rivals, and will fight each other upon sight. The winner consumes the loser.

Tame Clobbopus and Grapploct often indulge in a wider range of seafoods, though will still shun most other foods on most occasions.

Hazards

Although small, Clobbopus pack a fair amount of muscle power, and even the younger individuals should be given a wide berth on a bad day. Clobbopus, to put it politely, are immature, both biologically and behaviourally. They are prone to throwing toddlerish temper tantrums and wildly flailing their tentacles around, which can cause severe bruising on a careless person. These are relatively minor in comparison to the danger that Grapploct can pose. While captive Grapploct are fairly tame when raised from the immature stage, Grapploct in the wild are, though not childish, still brutally temperamental. Their tentacles are capable of causing broken bones and, if they choose, they may grapple tightly onto an unfortunate onlooker with practically no way to escape. Their beak-like mouths are also fairly strong and while they are mainly adapted for busting open shells, they can cause severe trauma to limbs and possibly warrant amputation for the most severe cases. These cases are thankfully incredibly rare, as many a trainer and non-trainer has been educated on the biology of the line.

Tamed Clobbopus and Grapploct are known to stay close to their trainer and affectionately grasp onto them. While this behaviour is seen as endearing, Grapploct in particular, when excited, can get a little too riled up, which can sometimes lead to unfortunate circumstances concerning an overly-affectionate Pokémon. Some trainers opt to give their Clobbopus an Everstone partially for this reason, and partially because they find the toddlerish mannerisms of Clobbopus endearing.

Courting and Childrearing

Courtship among Grapploct is fairly simple. Meeting each other, the male and female grapple onto each other, tussle for a while, and then mate. The males have specialised "arms" for inseminating the female, though a few individuals will break it off and gift it to the female for her to use later. Scientists are not entirely clear on the whats or whys for this latter method. Grapploct can lay up to a couple of hundred tiny eggs which, somewhat transparent, hatch into immature Clobbopus a few days later. Many Grapploct abandon their young once they hatch, which they can afford to do since so many are born. The hatchlings take a few weeks to reach full size and are entirely aquatic until then.

Social Structure

Clobbopus and Grapploct are, for the large part, solitary creatures. Swarms can occasionally be seen of the former, but there is little harmony in their movement. Many of the grouped Grapploct sightings can be attributed to same-sex rivals picking fights with each other.

In Human Culture

As mentioned above, Clobbopus and Grapploct are sometimes kept as pets. They are often given specialised enclosures which allow them to leave the water and wander around. When properly trained out of too-strong grasping, Grapploct can be worthwhile companions and enrich their trainers' lives.

The nastier side of their biology has also been inspiring for humans. Many a masked wrestler kicked off their career due to bearing witness to fights involving Grapploct. They often adopt a stand-your-ground style involving grapples and throws, along with the occasional dirty, underhanded tactic. Many of their costumes also invoke elements of Grapploct's appearance. Jujitsu fighters also have a similar style of fighting to Grapploct, which is likely how the species came to be known as the Jujitsu Pokémon.

Various media depictions of them are largely negative, owing to their temperamental behaviour. A series of movies starring pirates feature a rather brutal foe designed after a Grapploct, with Kingler-like pincers in the place of hands, and tentacles on his face and around his mouth in a beard-like arrangement.
