Rolin and his Allies
Rolin of the Cauldron
The titular character and main protagonist, Rolin is a bat whose four-year-long rule over his people came to an abrupt end when the Kettle attacked. The onslaught left him one of the very few bats still alive, and his once beautiful home reduced to a single hollow tree stump.
- Audience Surrogate: He's been holed up in his tree stump for eight months straight, thus has no idea how much the world's changed, and must be shown alongside the reader.
- Big Good: The leader of the Rebellion against the Kettle and their allies.
- Cassandra Truth: His warnings about Sorrel's true intentions regularly go ignored. Even Deneb dismisses them, which ends up costing her dearly when Sorrel tries to kill her.
- The Shut-In: Cuts himself off from the world for eight months straight after the Kettle's onslaught.
