  • The final confrontation in "The Kitsune" was pretty darn awesome. The unnamed US Marine whom we've been following the entire story, is pretty much in his Darkest Hour even before being deployed to Vietnam. His friend, Jameson, is missing, and Bryan, a Japanese-American restaurant owner helping him find the man, has told the protagonist that he's very likely been killed by the titular Yōkai. Despite this, the Marine decides to risk his life anyway, and brings a gun with him for protection. When he finally confronts the creature in its true form, rather than flinch or run away, he decides to shoot the creature. While at first it does seemingly nothing, a few more shots into the creature's chest and stomach cause it to get badly wounded, flinch, retreat, and even attempt to wound the Marine before fleeing. In short, our protagonist just shot and wounded a Yōkai and survived the ordeal, even managing to locate and rescue his friend Jameson, who was indeed in the process of being Eaten Alive. Sadly, Jameson dies of his wounds only days later, but at least his body was recovered.
