• During the sting operation, Wayne pretends to be a specific Set thug. He then has a conversation with one of the Set contacts, getting everything he needs out of the man without him ever realizing he's talking to an imposter. Even VenDell, an immortal shapeshifter with hundreds of years of experience, is impressed.
  VenDell: It's patently unfair. A mortal should not be able to stand beside one of the Bearers of the Contract and seem a fair match to their skill in imitation.
• Marsh taking full advantage of the fact that everyone views him as Death to get Wax out of jail, on pure intimidation.
  Entrone: I'm not of your religion...
  Ironeyes: Death is not a religion. It is a fact.
  Entrone: But-
  Ironeyes: How would you like to die, mortal? And when? Quietly? In the night, of a failing heart? Drowning, in one of your new ships as it sinks? Here? Right now? Crushed by the weight of your own stupidity?
• How powerful of a forger has Shai become since The Emperor's Soul? Previously, her most powerful essence mark transformed her into a master martial artist. Now, she is able to rewrite herself into an Elantrian.
• Wax out-thinking his sister, who thinks of him as nothing but a brawny thug. He realizes that he can't outsmart her...but he can play on his knowledge of her to win. Which is what he does.
• Wayne's Dying Moment of Awesome at the climax of the story. The Set-hijacked warship is heading for Elendel, with three harmonium-trellium bombs on board. The crew has locked down the navigation and then killed themselves, so the ship can't be turned aside in the time they've got. The harmonium-trellium bombs can be disarmed by detonating the harmonium with water, but 1) that would still make a big enough explosion to kill whoever does it, and 2) as soon as they detonate one bomb the electronic anti-tamper circuits will set off the other two. Wayne Steelpushes Wax off the boat and to safety, and then uses his newfound ability to burn duralumin plus seventeen bags' worth of bendalloy to make the most powerful speed bubble in history, one so intense that he is moving at very nearly the speed of light and has time to detonate all three bombs before the explosion from the first one kills him or the anti-tamper circuits go off. And Wayne did this fully knowing that he was going to his death.
