  • After failing to convince Ron's deadbeat grandfather Albert to run into a burning building to save a child in "The Leaving of Liverpool", Gary then runs in and does it himself. Even though Ron's grandfather ends up stealing the credit, you have to give it to Gary, it was an incredibly brave thing to do.
  • Gary calling out Billy Joe on his racism in "The Yanks are Coming", then later tricking him into drinking to the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • In "How I Won the War", Gary, Phoebe, and some performers are trapped behind enemy lines in Belgium and Gary is put in charge of the group. They hide in a barn and not only does Gary manage to give a speech that has the performers believing in themselves, but he also uses their talents and what they have in the barn to come up with a plan to beat the Germans who find them. And it works. Outside of a moment where panic grips him and he's paralysed, which he is able to overcome, Gary actually steps up and becomes the war hero he's always pretended to be.
  • In "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" Gary goes full Papa Wolf when a slum lord threatens his adult son over owed rent.
Gary: You take your hands off him. You lay one finger on him and I promise you - I PROMISE you that I will break your legs. Then I will break your arms and then I will jump up and down on you until you are porridge.
