Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader as reflection of Batman's personality

Whatever Happened is all about different characters recounting how Batman died, getting down the idea that no matter how people view Batman, he will die in the process. But when looking at the stories being told, it can also be a reflection of aspects of Batman's personality in the lenses of being The Determinator.

  • Catwoman's story: as pointed out by Batman afterwards, his death here is Robin Hood's death, getting at the idea of Batman as folk hero, and also the idea of Batman being unable to let go of his crusade.
  • Alfred's story: Batman as self actualization for Bruce Wayne. That Batman is how Bruce is able to face his trauma, and even if it was created by a lie in this universe, he represents the best parts of Bruce.
  • Robin's story: Batman is a symbol of hope. He was holy. And was a force for great good in his journey.
  • Clayface's story: Batman as a man driven by his own pain. That he said "Everyone's worth it." Which adds the dimension of empathy to Batman in trying to reform villains when he has a chance.
  • Joker's story: Batman as The Anti-Nihilist. In the face of despair and darkness, Batman refuses to laugh at the pain of the world, and would push through it even unto death.
  • Superman's story: Batman as deterrent for Gotham. This came up in more recent times, but the idea that through criminals targeting Batman, he keeps the chaos of Gotham contained. As he said, "If they're after me, innocent people won't be hurt."
