Session 3: Worth one arm

So, last time we crashed a military grade flying vessel, are probably wanted criminals now, and discovered some conspiracy. Totally par for the course.

Anyway, being unable to do anything with the ship in its current state, we decided to head to Casollin and see if we could find out some more information on the stone hearts. That involved heading through Mandra, which we had apparently flattened a large chunk along the way.

Being typical adventurers, we decide to walk in a straight line right through the carnage and destruction and end up running into a group of three elves. The middle one demands we put down our weapons and come quietly. You better bet a fight ensues. The middle one also seems to never, ever miss and 1d8+2 every round begins to hurt to after a while so LEE just berserked him into gibs. Upon going down, a wind blew by, causing several leaves to mask our view for long enough for him to disappear. The other two went down normally. How much money do you want to bet he becomes a reoccurring enemy?

After that, we arrive in Casollin. Think steampunk. Everything around here is metal, the walls, buildings, ground, all metal, with lots of a smoke stacks and steam powered vehicles going around. First order of business is for Tentacle to stab some citizens in the back and steal their clothes. LEE gets to go in solely because there's so many Warforged walking about that she looks absolutely normal. Second order of business is getting Snat a new trumpet. Right around here is when I walked out for a moment to use the bathroom. I came back to find out that some how LEE got into an arm wrestling match with the instrument maker's assistant Warforged. Don't ask how.

LEE just berserked and ripped the poor guy's arm off netting us a lot of gold and a free trumpet. Of course, instead of keeping a low profile, this escalated into a mega tournament of arm wrestling with boat loads of cheating going on in the background as all of the other members in the party keep casting whatever enchantment they could think of to bolster LEE some more.

After crippling about half a dozen more Warforged, some military guys showed up with a Large Warforged, like a nine foot tall Warforged. And, oh yeeeessss, they had the brilliant idea to make LEE face this guy too. Due to some absurd rule lawyering and their painfully higher charisma stats, LEE got forced into the match and lost an arm along with half of the winnings in a single round. GLORIOUS! So much for using all of those two handed weapons. Well, for better or worse, LEE's going to be running around using her right arm as a makeshift club until we can afford repairs.

After that, we finally get back on the rails and stalk the military guys back to the research center where Giant Rip Your Arm Off Bot was apparently developed. Vosh put his stolen engineer uniform on again along with Niffen and proceeded to break in via open window. LEE, Snat, and Tentacle get lay about outside feeling super useful. Anyway, the building ends up looking exceedingly normal, it's just a repair place for Warforged. Actually, then we get the idea to cast Detect Undead. As expected, Niffen's not only able to detect our heart chunks but several... somethings below the first floor. A second sweep finds them secret passage under a Warforged repair table, but the problem is that there's several other people in the room. They send a message to be distracting so LEE starts smashing the wall with her arm and Tentacle makes a bunch of bright colors, promptly many of the engineers to go over look. Snat gets hoisted in to cast lullaby and sleep on the two remaining dwarves.

Infiltration is a success and LEE and Tentacle get away. The other three head to a lower level and start seeing several of the stone hearts in glass tanks. There's very few researchers here and they immediately spot the group and bind them with magic. Some other decrepit looking dwarf comes over to Vosh and asks what he's doing here again. Cue backstory expansion. The dwarf is apparently named something exceedingly, stupidly long, so he shall just be referred to as Rovsk. Apparently Vosh was involved in the development of the stone hearts much earlier in his life and was once a much more powerful wizard. We don't get much more information than that and there isn't much of a chance to ask Vosh about this stuff but apparently Rovsk had killed Vosh at some point. I'm sure these holes with get filled in later. Then some soldiers came in and took Niffen, Vosh, and Snat to military prison on the orders of Rovsk, not wanting to risk having to kill Vosh and his companions again only to see him resurface.

Outside, LEE and Tentacle spot the three being shoved into one of the vehicles and taken across town. And that's about where the session ends.

Okay, so LEE's missing an arm, meaning strength check penalties for anything involving two arms normally. We've also got a makeshift club called LEE's right arm. I can deal.

Also, LEVEL UP. Means it's feat time. Currently on the table:

  • Mythril Reflexes (Haste for X rounds, where X = level/2 at any given time and nonconsecutive): Kind of terrible at this point since that means one whole round hasted per day.
  • Power Attack: Also pretty terrible but necessary to get cleave.
  • And whatever else you suggest.

Hm... When you make repairs, place a crossbow in the severed area ala Guts.

Also, I love the Halfway Plot Switch Once An Episode.

Yeah, we do that a lot, don't we?

A character who can't remember their involvement in the larger plot due to a previous death? Didn't that same thing happen in the 4E game you blogged before?

Anyway, I'd say take the Power Attack since cleave is a must. Saving the reflexes for level 9 or 12 when it'll make you storm of metallic death sounds like it can only work to your advantage.

It's worth noting that mithril reflexes is a homebrew feat, so make extra sure to run it by your DM. I'd go with Power Attack, as it's actually pretty essential for your damage output.

Check with your DM about stealing an arm off of Mister Rippentear. Ironic turnabout, tear off his arm for a...transplant? Prosthesis? Whatever. Giant crushing hand. Basically, either it's awesome and you get a big arm, or it's awesome and you get a big arm with some sort of stat bonus attached.

Actually, darnpenguin, the previous game was some guy getting reincarnated. I think Vosh actually knew about the past this time since he didn't mention not remembering his past, he just didn't want to tell us about his past.

Plus he's True Neutral with some vaguely Neutral Evil in there, so if I were to take a bet, Vosh is with us to simply get revenge or start up his own little project.

Yeah, Power Attack's pretty necessary, though if you want something you can reap the benefits of immediately try Blindfight or Improved Init.
