* AwardSnub: Not that anyone really expected it to be recognized in such a great year for movies, but not getting a nomination for Best Original Score at the Oscars is pretty unfortunate. Mica Levi eventually got a well-deserved nomination in that category for her equally mysterious and haunting score of ''Film/{{Jackie}}'' in 2017, only to get snubbed over ''Film/LaLaLand''.

** Averted with the Deformed Man. Actor Adam Pearson has neurofibromatosis type I (which causes non-cancerous tumor growth), and that is exactly what he looks like in person.

* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: Particularly the opening few minutes, which consist of a hodgepodge of abstract images (which resemble an artificial eye being put together), random babbling syllables and words, and creepy-ass music.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Mica Levi's gleefully mysterious dark-ambient score. It honestly sounds nightmarish at times, particularly the tracks "Creation" and "Lonely Void".

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Between the enigmatic, sexually predatory alien and her hormone-bloodied victims, the film is ''very'' short on sympathetic characters or compelling conflict. The alien does seem to get better later on, [[spoiler: but it's too little too late, and the story spills into full-on EvilVersusEvil at the end when she's attacked and killed by a would-be rapist.]] The deformed man is essentially the only sympathetic character who is explored in any real depth, though the wetsuit-wearing camper exhausted himself saving a man from drowning.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Between the enigmatic, sexually predatory alien and her hormone-bloodied victims, the film is ''very'' short on sympathetic characters or compelling conflict. The alien does seem to get better later on, [[spoiler: but it's too little too late, and the story spills into full-on EvilVersusEvil at the end when she's attacked and killed by a would-be rapist.]] The deformed man is essentially the only sympathetic character who is explored in any real depth.
* MemeticMutation: A paparazzi-captured context-void image from the scene in which the alien trips and falls on the street evolved into the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/scarlett-johansson-falling-down "Scarlett Johansson Falling Down" meme]].

* AssholeVictim: The Alien. Her sympathetic moments do little to dispel the fact that she spends most of the film coldly murdering human males, regardless of the film's attempt at BlueAndOrangeMorality. [[spoiler:When she is killed by a rapist, it comes across as more ironic than anything.]]

* NotSoDifferent: The Alien and the Logger are both [[spoiler: sexual predators who are clearly experienced at what they do. The biggest difference between them is that the Logger [[{{KarmaHoudini}} gets away Scot free.]] ]]

* NightmareFuel: The beach scene, in which a woman drowns trying to save the family dog, her husband is implied to drown trying to rescue ''her'', and their young child is left alone on the beach, frightened and crying, while the alien and, later, the motorcyclist, completely ignore him. It's heavily implied that the child drowns in the rising tide, as well. The scene is made even scarier by the fact that this sort of thing could actually happen in real life.

* MemeticMutation: A scene in which the alien trips and falls on the street evolved into the [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/scarlett-johansson-falling-down "Scarlett Johansson Falling Down" meme]].
