* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Even though the specials run on BlackComedy and NegativeContinuity, some of the segments (if not the whole episode itself) are considered ''too'' dark or depressing overall. "Citizen Kang", "G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad", "The Night of The Dolphin", "Married To The Blob", "The Day The Earth Looked Stupid", "War & Pieces", "Freaks No Geeks", and "Toy Gory" are among some of the darkest segments with {{Downer Ending}}s that wear out the viewer instead of entertain. Not helping matters is how it's usually the final segment of the episode that relies on this trope.

*** Lisa ''screams'' once she realizes what has happened, and Marge in particular has a moment where her "new" voice works to the show's benefit, as can be heard when she is crying over Bart's slack-jawed, dead-eyed body at Dr. Hibbert's office. She just sounds so defeated and heartbroken when she learns that she can never speak to her son again.

*** Lisa ''screams'' once she realizes Lisa's scream when toy-Bart suggests watching what she wants to watch may come across as comedic, but think about it. Bart is sitting dead-eyed and unresponsive at the bottom of the treehouse and inexplicably has happened, a pull-string in his back that obviously manipulates him into speaking. Her scream wasn't directed at his offer, but she more likely realized he was dead right then and there.

Marge in particular has a moment where her "new" voice works to the show's benefit, as can be heard when she is crying over Bart's slack-jawed, dead-eyed body at Dr. Hibbert's office. She just sounds so defeated and heartbroken when she learns that she can never speak to her son again.again.
*** Homer's crying in the original sounds pretty much like how it always does. In fact, it feels like a bit of an under-reaction to the news that his son randomly died out of nowhere. However, [[https://youtu.be/nVG6mw4X3FM?t=199 take a listen to the Spanish dub]]. Here, he's loudly hollering and wailing in proper ''anguish''.

Added DiffLines:

*** Judging by Bart's interactions with Marge and Homer throughout the segment, it's implied that he actually had a better relationship that he does in canon, helped by them not knowing what he does to his old toys. That makes it all the more horrible that he suddenly died in an inexplicable way while they were sleeping.

** The ending of "Treehouse of Horror XXXI"'s "Toy Gory" is not only horrifying, what with Bart's toys killing him, removing his innards and replacing them with toys before dumping him outside for his family to find, but it's also a heartbreaker of a segment. Lisa ''screams'' once she realizes what has happened, and Marge in particular crying over Bart's slack-jawed, dead-eyed body at Dr. Hibbert's office sounds very much like real, desolate weeps of a mother who's just learned she will never be able to speak to her son again. A more subtle example appears during the epilogue, where Bart's toys mess with his corpse as revenge for his treatment of them... which is now in the family's house. As if Homer and Marge were just that grief-stricken and, unable to get over Bart, just keep his body around the house as if everything's normal.

*** When Homer begs for Bart to speak to him, he lets out a canned line from his voice box about how he loves his mother and father without anyone pulling the string. It's plausible that Bart isn't fully dead, but has been lobotomized so that he has just enough life to be able to not decompose, hence why the toy's taunting message carved into his chest during the epilogue has it appear in fresh, red blood rather than dried, brown blood. If this is true, then Bart speaking without having the string pulled might have been Bart using whatever sentience he had left to use whatever canned sentences he had to work with to tell his parents that he loves them. ** ''Treehouse of Horror XXII'' is often considered to be the worst TOH episode. * CreatorsPet: Lisa. Granted, she doesn't get off the hook ALL the time, but you may have noticed that throughout all of the murders, mutations, and what have you that happens in ''Treehouse of Horror'', [[ImmuneToSlapstick Lisa tends to comes out unscathed]], or at the very least isn't affected as bad as the other characters (a prime example being the ''Treehouse of Horror XI'' intro where the family portrays ''Series/TheMunsters'' and whereas the rest of her family, including Bart, are all brutally slain, she walked away completely unharmed. Or "Bart Simpson's Dracula," where she is the only family member not turned into a vampire.) Of course, the creators admitted that they like Lisa, so that figures.
