* HypeBacklash: For reasons mentioned under OnceOriginalNowCommon, the game might be seen as relatively tame - the fact that there have been 2 games released afterwards that also got an AO rating for violence alone probably contributes to this reaction. Some have even argued that releasing it wouldn't have affected EA's reputation much, if at all, considering that EA themselves were no strangers to violent video games even before this game. Some would go even further and argue that more violent games had been released prior to this game.

* UnintentionalUncannyValley: Violet is very creepy to look at, despite being one of the more innocent characters, lore-wise. In order to get her flexibility across, the designers made her limbs and torso unnaturally long, making her look less "flexible" and more "stretched on the rack".

Renamed one trope.

* CommonKnowledge: Many people (including contributors to this Tropes page) like to highlight the fact that this game was intended to be released with an AO rating, not realizing that the past tense isn't just due to Thrill Kill never being officially released. As explained in this video by WebVideo/MattMcMuscles, the early intention was for the game to be AO until someone reminded the dev team that most retailers wouldn't sell an AO game and Sony (or any major console manufacturer) would likely not approve an AO game be released on their system, forcing the game to be drastically Bowdlerize Bowdlerized.

* OnceOriginalNowCommon: The game had a lot of hype behind it, being considered one of the most violent and darkest games ever produced at the time. The game is violent, but these days, thanks in part due to HypeBacklash, it's nowhere near as gruesome as what we have seen come out of the gaming industry as of recent. Heck, the game wasn't even that violent in comparison to games released at the time, such as VideoGame/MortalKombat4.

* CompleteMonster:
** Cleetus: Cleetus T. Radley was a cannibalistic SerialKiller before dying of a tapeworm. Partaking in the Thrill Kill tournament to be brought back from the dead, Cleetus will often devour or dismember his opponents. If he is brought back, Cleetus will toss a health inspector into a meat grinder for giving him a bad review. It is then revealed he is now selling his victims' meat to the unsuspecting masses.
** Dr. Faustus: Gabriel Faustus was a deranged plastic surgeon who disfigured many of his patients for no other reason than because he could. Upon dying and going to Hell, he took part in the Thrill Kill tournament to be reincarnated. Faustus is an animal in combat, often biting off his opponents' heads or disfiguring them like he did his previous victims. If he wins and is reincarnated, Faustus kills one of his patients while trying to attach his signature jaws to their face.
** Mammoth: Franklin Peppermint was a postal worker who killed his coworkers and customers after being fired. Becoming a monstrous, fur-covered beast in Hell, Mammoth joins the Thrill Kill tournament to be resurrected. Mammoth uses his immense strength to tear his opponents limb from limb, often beating them to death with the severed limbs or just leaving them to bleed to death. If he wins, he is brought back to Earth still trapped in his monstrous form, and proceeds to kill an innocent old lady by stuffing her and her dog in a mailbox.

Uncanny Valley is IUEO now and the subjective version has been split; cleaning up misuse and ZCE in the process

* UncannyValley: The people in the cutscenes are a bit stiff and lifeless, even in motion. It's a bit laughable, but excusable given the time the game was er... unreleased.

Misspelling "plays" as "place"... I don't get it.

* NightmareFuel: All over the place. The concept alone is quite unsettling, but it goes even further by just how disturbing most of the characters and their backstories are in the game. Also, that eerie ambience that place during fights is just plain creepy, with audible moaning and whispers being heard throughout.

* ArtisticLicenseLaw: The Tormentor was executed in the electric chair by Arizona. Arizona never used electrocution, using hanging, the GasChamber and finally lethal injection.
