* CharacterPerceptionEvolution: For the longest time, Javier was pretty divisive in the fandom for being seen as a VanillaProtagonist who was nowhere near as interesting as Clementine or Lee. Nowadays however, Javier is widely praised for being a likable protagonist who gets way too much shit from his highly detested family, having quite a few moments of badass, and being MrFanservice. As such, he's not only considered one of, if not, the best character of the season, but one of the best characters of the franchise in general.

* CatharsisFactor: Let's face it, after many, many moments of Gabe being a whiny teenager and David pushing Javier around and being just a JerkAss in general, it can be highly satisfying for [[TheWoobie Javier]] to finally snap at Gabe and tell him off while finally being able to fight David and even call him out for being a failure while he's dying.

Javier appears to be highly well liked nowadays

* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Javi. Some players find him likable and refreshing and are interested in his story of trying his damndest to keep his family from falling apart. Others find him to be a boring VanillaProtagonist and feel that he shouldn't have replaced Clementine as the main protagonist.
** Similarly to the above, Kate has a fair share of detractors due to how hard the game [[StrangledByTheRedString pushes her and Javi together]] despite the fact that she's still technically married to David, especially since the flashback at the beginning of Episode 2 reveals that she was basically dying to get into Javi's pants even pre-apocalypse. Still, she never does anything explicitly worse than cheating from a moral perspective, and it's not like David was exactly the greatest guy to begin with.

* AccidentalAesop: The choice between siding with Kenny or siding with Jane from Season 2 turns into a lesson in ''New Frontier", "Just because someone has a point, doesn't mean they have an actual solution to the problem" or "Better the devil you know than the one you don't". Although Jane was right about Kenny's anger making him a danger to others, she wasn't exactly the best alternative for Clementine because she committed suicide not long after finding out that she was pregnant. Kenny may have anger issues but he, at least, knows how to raise a baby and sticks with Clem and AJ. until he reaches 2-5 years old when Kenny dies in a car accident.

** Clementine and Gabe is probably just as bad (if not worse) than Javi/Kate as Gabe's role to cause more problem every time he helped and poor character made him an unsuitable love interest for Clementine, whom the fans come to love over the years. Fans are even more angry when Clem also shows feelings for him [[spoiler:and can kiss [[{{Squick}} a dying and bleeding Gabe]] in one of the endings]].

Anti Shipping Goggles was redirected to Shipping Goggles, which is a Definition Only Page and doesn't allow examples

* AntiShippingGoggles: Numerous fans ''despise'' the ShipTease between Clementine and [[spoiler: Gabe]], largely due to Gabe feeling like an unworthy fit for fan-favorite Clementine, who is significantly more mature and capable. Many players reacted with disgust to a potential ending in which Clementine [[spoiler:kisses him as he dies, with what sounds like a confession of love.]] In addition, next season has Louis and Violet, who are more likable and better-developed characters that show better chemistry with Clem. Players were pleased at the dialogue option to have Clementine dismiss her relationship with Gabe.

** Come Episode 5, Kate begins insisting that Javi and the group step up to protect Richmond from the walker invasion, and Javi is guilt-tripped for trying to save his family even though every person in the city seems to be either a corrupt, violent scumbag or a feckless, underdeveloped moron. This especially applies to named characters like Fern, who almost shoots Javi and Kate for (quite justifiably) fighting back against Joan's tyranny and causing casualties among her family, when she and her husband participated in the New Frontier's raids against other settlements in the first place. When David steps in to disable Fern by breaking her arm, he's treated as though he's overreacting when Fern's lucky he didn't kill her, and his decision to abandon Richmond to its fate comes across as entirely reasonable considering how the New Frontier betrayed him (his only mistake is doing so while the walker herd is still rampaging outside the walls). In the ending, Jesus suggests out of the blue that Javi lead Richmond himself, as though he owes it any loyalty whatsoever.

It gets worse when the entire episode begins brow-beating Javi (and by extension the player) for things ''The New Frontier'' caused like blowing a hole in the wall (''they'' threw the molitov cocktail that caused the crash), as if the player is supposed to care that this band of bloodthirsty child-murdering settlement-destroying raiders is now suffering as a direct consequence of their own stupid actions. As far as I know, Tripp is not really hated by the fanbase.

** Tripp has gotten some of this for his petty behavior and constant RomanticPlotTumor with Eleanor, his tendency to screw things up and jump to conclusions at the worst times made many people consider him, alongside the good majority of the New Frontier cast, as one of the most annoying characters in the game.

* WhatAnIdiot: Quite a number of characters make such idiotic decisions that often resulted in needless drama and deaths, [[ContestedSequel which is one of the reasons why A New Frontier is not as well liked compared to past seasons]]:
** Richmond as a town. If Joan's clandestine and gruesome raids to innocent settlements doesn't upset you enough, [[spoiler: how about Joan double-crossing on the deal to spare a life, and kill whoever Javi chose to spare, anyway]]. This town is shockingly spineless about the corruption that Joan glaringly displays. And then, when a riot inevitably breaks out, Richmond's own armed members shoot their own civilians that they are organized to protect.
** Clint and Lingard have known David for years, who has already proven himself to be extremely loyal to Richmond. It stands that they would at least consider it from David’s point of view when he reveals Joan’s actions. Not only do they not do that, but they also kick David out, in spite of the evidence (and Max’s confession) proving him right. There’s an implication that they’re following her to remain in power, despite outnumbering her two to one.
** Eleanor and Tripp get hit with this, '''big time''': (determinant) they get pissed at Javi for killing their friend Conrad, yet they decide to trust Joan. Sure, don’t trust the man who went out of his way to make sure you two survive, trust the person who actively had your home destroyed for petty reasons and expose Javi's plan to her even though she makes it clear she’s willing to kill your friend. To say Tripp and Eleanor were not being rational is an understatement.
** Potentially David. [[spoiler: After Javi agrees to the feasible deal of choosing exile from Richmond so that their friends and family can leave without further violence, what does David do? He quickly grabs a gun and threatens to kill Clint. A massive problem with this is that Clint was the one to organize this peaceful resolution, and Joan should be the one to persecuted for Richmond's corruption. Instead, David kills Clint after a struggle, which makes his murder come off as grossly unjust, since Clint (despite being UnintentionallyUnsympathetic) was at least trying to reach a reasonable resolution to the Richmond vs Garcia conflict.]]
** [[spoiler: Kenny]] prompting the inexperienced Clementine to speed up when teaching her how to drive, with both of them not wearing seat belts, ''with baby A.J. riding with them in the car'', and then taking control of the steering wheel by force to swerve when she hits a lone walker on the road while speeding instead of commanding her to hit the breaks. This results in [[spoiler: Kenny's]] easily preventable death as they are catapulted through the windscreen upon impact, breaking his spine and legs upon crashing to the ground, and then being devoured by walkers shortly afterwards. What's worse, this leaves Clementine and baby A.J. to fend for themselves after [[spoiler: Kenny]] dies, since they were lucky enough to not die in the crash as well.
