* AllAnimationIsDisney: Related, even though the film isn't animation. As it was following the lead of ''Film/TheChroniclesOfNarnia'', and director Mark Waters had done Disney films such as ''Film/FreakyFriday2003'', several viewers thought it was released by Disney. It was produced by Nickelodeon actually.

* CriticalDissonance: Critics actually rated the movie higher - 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience consensus was a little lower at 62%, presumably coming from fans of the books.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: While no one would have ever doubted Freddie Highmore's talents if they'd seen him in ''Film/FindingNeverland'', it has to be said how well he portrays twin brothers - to the degree that the film's IMDB boards had multiple threads from people who didn't realise it was the same actor.

* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of the movie. It is a heavily CompressedAdaptation that goes through the story way too quickly and discards multiple characters and plot points, but still manages to accurately portray the characters and nail key scenes.

* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of the movie. It is a heavily CompressedAdaptation that goes through the story way too quickly and discards multiple characters and plot points, but still manages to accurately portray the characters and nail key scenes. It does however have a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes (81%), presumably from viewers who hadn't read the books.

Added DiffLines:

* WTHCastingAgency: It seems odd to cast Dame Joan Plowright as the older Lucinda Spiderwick. While she gives a fine performance, she inexplicably keeps her English accent when her child self clearly had an American one. It's entirely possible for her accent to change since she's only six in the flashbacks, but she lived in the house alone for most of her subsequent life (surrounded by American accented fantasy creatures as well).
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Downplayed, since it's clearly a PG fantasy adventure. But it subverts GoshDangItToHeck by having Jared say "hell" and "damn" a couple of times, and has some sequences that might be a bit too intense for younger children. There's also a lot of PG {{Gorn}}, and a scene where [[spoiler: Jared stabs his father to prove he's an impostor]]. It also deals with divorce in a frank and honest way.

Doesn't appear to be an Aesop such much as something a character said once.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: In book 2 of ''Beyond The Spiderwick Chronicles, Laurie explains that she lies because "lying works," and nothing in the story contradicts this claim. This, from a book aimed at 6-12 year olds.

* HilariousInHindsight: So let me get this straight; this is about a pair of preteen twins who discover an old journal, [[spoiler:which was written by a relative who disappeared years ago]], that doubles as a guide to the secret mystical world around them? [[WesternAnimation/GravityFalls That sounds awfully familiar...]]

* NightmareFuel: A fair amount.
** Mulgarath and his unnatural eyes is an incredibly nasty customer in just about any of his forms, though his native (ogre) form wins the prize for sheer ugly. The goblins and trolls aren't exactly going to win any beauty contests, either.
** "Click klack; watch your back"
** The Banshee from the field guide.
** The field guide, especially the troll descriptions.
** Anytime a character has to face goblins or other unfriendly without the stone or hobgoblin spit to let them see them.
** The fairies drowning in honey in the last book. Jared saves a few but is traumatized by the experience.
** The third book introduces Unicorns to the series, something which would be wonderful if it weren't for the fact that the unicorn in question shows Mallory and Jared a vision of why there are so few unicorns (and faeries in general) left: human hunters killing them for their pelts and horns. This is described in an incredible amount of detail for a children's book.
