* BrokenAesop:
** The message from the original, and in the sequel, is supposed to be that you can't judge by appearances and true beauty is on the inside. Unfortunately, it is distorted by the way that Quasimodo not only falls in love with the beautiful Madellaine, but she also goes through a rather formulaic HeelFaceTurn, and the villain Sarousch is not really all that handsome to the viewer, despite his own vanity, meaning that the viewers get a solid BeautyEqualsGoodness message instead.
** One of the other messages, that prejudice is wrong, is also broken. Phoebus is portrayed as being in the wrong for his prejudice against carnies, and he says that he was wrong at the end. But he wasn't wrong; the carnies really ''were'' stealing from people, and Madellaine was the only exception, so his suspicions were entirely justified!

** Jennifer Love Hewitt's “I’m Gonna Love You” is classic late 90’s/early 2000’s cheesy pop garbage, but it’s still genuinely sweet especially since we, the audience, are well aware that Quasimodo is indeed a guy worth the mushy lyrics of the song.
* CommonKnowledge: No, Creator/TMSEntertainment did ''not'' do the animation for this film, as Creator/DougWalker inaccurately claimed in his Disneycember review of the film. It was outsourced to [[Creator/WaltDisneyAnimationUnits Disney's Japan-based sub-studio]]. However, several ex-TMS staffers did work on the film.

* EpilepticTrees: One popular theory is that Zephyr is not Esmeralda's biological child, but her ''stepson''; Phoebus' child from a previous marriage. This is frequently postulated to [[FanWank explain why he looks pretty much nothing like her]].

** Madellaine, who many fans felt paled in comparison to the original portrayal of Esmeralda, coming off as bland and [[DesignatedLoveInterest clearly created solely as a girlfriend for Quasi]]. It doesn't help that, rather than making Madellaine a truly strong woman, the writers seem to have settled for making Esmeralda weak and ineffectual in comparison.

** The same principle applies to the rest of the cast as despite the movie’s low-quality, they sound like they are making the most of what they have.

* FridgeLogic:
** Wouldn't having gems on the ''inside'' of a bell make the tone come out warped? To say nothing of the fact that bells are specifically designed to withstand long term wear and damage from the powerful ringing whereas jewels are fragile and probably wouldn't even stand up to a week of such attrition. Also, wouldn't the {{Anvilicious}} moral of "TrueBeautyIsOnTheInside" have worked just as well with the sounds the bells make? The decorations were hardly even needed. Let's not forget that the clapper (the pendulum-like component that produces the sounds of a bell) would probably smash the jewels into pieces.
** Sarousch makes balls disappear and reappear in Zephyr's hands right before his eyes, something no amount of stage magic could do. He later makes La Fidel disappear despite it being in a bell tower in a city he has never been to before. The trick is supposed to be sending the bell down a tunnel, but there is no way he could have a tunnel connected all the way up there, especially when he didn't even initally know the bell's exact location.

* TearJerker: The scene when Quasimodo [[WhatTheHellHero furiously chews out Madellaine]] when he thinks she had a hand in stealing La Fidele and was only pretending to love him (despite her pleas that she did not intend to), breaks off their relationship, retreats in the Notre Dame cathedral and angrily walks up the stairs as his anger turns into heartbreak and he stops to cry. The end of that scene almost harkens back to the first film where a sadden and humiliated Quasimodo retreated to the Cathedral after the way he was treated at the Festival.

Hindsight misuse (wrong-way / actor fluff)

* HilariousInHindsight:
** The Gargoyles' quip in the first movie that "Frollo's nose is long and he wears a truss" is exactly how Sarousch is designed.
** Creator/HaleyJoelOsment being in the cast of this movie, since ''VideoGame/{{Kingdom Hearts 3D|DreamDropDistance}}'' has Osment's character Sora visit the events of the original movie, interact with Quasi, Phoebus, and Esmeralda, and even contend with Frollo. Bonus points, Zephyr is a wind-themed name, thematically similar to Sora.

Removing a sentence that seems like unnecessary bashing.

* {{Sequelitis}}: Often considered to be a contender for one of the worst, if not the absolute worst, of the Disney DirectToVideo sequels. The first film had gorgeous animation, dealt with some pretty heavy themes for a Disney movie, had a great villain and stellar music. The sequel dispensed with all of these and made the tone much LighterAndSofter. It's clear the only purpose of the film was to give Quasimodo a girlfriend. Why Kevin Kline, Tom Hulce and Demi Moore stuck around for it is a mystery for future generations to wonder upon. It was so bad that it contributed to the end of Disney's DTV sequels.

These seem like more accurate reasons why this movie is so hated.

* FanonDiscontinuity: The general consensus is that the first movie ended on a perfect note and that a sequel was completely unnecessary. As such, most fans like to pretend that this movie never existed.

As such, animation, and the silly, flippant tone, most fans like to pretend that this movie never existed.

Uncanny Valley is IUEO now and the subjective version has been split; cleaning up misuse and ZCE in the process

* UncannyValley: We briefly get an image of non-deformed Quasimodo in his quest to find the love of another; for those who grew up with the first film, it may have this effect.
