* NightmareFuel: The blackened Shine Tower.

** The Big Blooper's raspy breathe is likely to make your skin crawl.

* RecycledPremise: Arguably of ''SonicAdventure2'''s. Alright, so the hero being blamed for the actions of the [[EvilTwin evil doppleganger]] didn't exactly originate from that game, but its still somewhat suspicious, considering that Sunshine came out only shortly after Sonic Adventure 2, with each being big-name [[PlatformGame Platform Games]].

* GoddamnedBats: Cataquacks can be a pain if you don't know how to deal with them. You can knock them out temporarily with water, but the area is so swarmed with them, you'll spend more time fending them off than actively working toward completing the mission.

* VillainDecay: This seems to be the only game in the main series that makes Bowser seem goofy, instead of the {{Badass}} BigBad he usually is portrayed as in the platformers, if only for [[{{Narm}} the lousy voice acting]] and the [[AnticlimaxBoss ridiculously easy boss fight]].

** VindicatedByHistory: Recently, there has been a surprising amount of defense for the game, with many fans now considering it better than the latest installments for the Wii and DS. [[MajorasMask Reminds]] [[WindWaker me]] [[TwilightPrincess of]] [[LegendofZelda something]].

* VillainDecay: This seems to be the only game in the main series that makes Bowser seem goofy, instead of the {{Badass}} BigBad he usually is portrayed as in the platformers, if only for [[{{Narm}} the lousy voice acting]] and the [[AnticlimaxBoss ridiculously easy boss fight]].
* TheWesley: FLUDD, both as a character and as a representation of the game's central gimmick. Mario loses his long jump from ''Super Mario 64'', and the way the game is structured, he's basically helpless without having the ability to squirt water at things. Also, the voice acting is - unsurprisingly - terrible, with the StopHelpingMe dialogue being the icing on the cake.
** FLUDD has even been accused of ruining Mario in ''SuperSmashBrosBrawl''.

** Also, if you lose a race with Il Piantissimo, Mario ''dies''. [[BreatherLevel Not that you should be losing those races, though]]...

** The eighth mission on Pinna Island, where you have to ride the same roller coaster you fought [[spoiler:Mecha Bowser]] in and pop all of the balloons in the course of 2 or 3 laps. Thanks to the poor, clunky aim, the rockets are ''very'' difficult to send off properly, so you could end up having two or three stray balloons taunting you towards the end. You can only shoot most of them within one or two 3-second periods during the entire lap, so if you miss your chance, even if you have half a minute of ride left, you're pretty much boned.

** [[spoiler:That is, until it is revealed that Peach really isn't Bowser Jr's mother. [[FanonDiscontinuity Not that the fans believe this]]]].

* {{Narm}}: Bowser's voice acting and dialogue makes him seem less like a giant scary turtle and more like a goofy sitcom dad. In fact, ''most'' of the voice acting is really lousy.

* YouFailLawForever: The trial cutscene near the beginning of the game.

* EnsembleDarkHorse: Petey Piranha made his first appearance in this game, and would appear again in ''MarioKart Double Dash!!'', ''VideoGame/SuperPrincessPeach'', ''SuperSmashBros Brawl'', and most of the Mario Sports titles. ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' would feature "Dino-Piranha", an {{Expy}} of him.

* LoveItOrHateIt: Some people like this game for the same reasons that other gamers typically hate it.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: This game is very [[LoveItOrHateIt divisive]] for having very few enemies and items in common with the other games in the series. Also, many fans dislike the removal of the long jump, one of Mario's best moves.

* ReplacementScrappy: Bowser Jr. [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap Until]] ''NewSuperMarioBrosWii''.

* BadassDecay: Bowser had gone from an imposing antagonist in ''64'' to a goofy dad with an easy final boss fight. Thankfully, ''SuperMarioGalaxy'' rectified this.

* EnsembleDarkHorse: Petey Piranha made his first appearance in this game, and would appear again in ''MarioKart Double Dash!!'', ''VideoGame/SuperPrincessPeach'', ''SuperSmashBros Brawl'', and most of the Mario Sports titles. ''SuperMarioGalaxy'' would feature "Dino-Piranha", an {{Expy}} of him.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment: A bunch of oily stuff turns up all over the place. On the beaches. In a tropical setting. DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything

* {{Squick}}: Yeah, Bowser's a [[BlatantLies big liar]], but the mere implication that Peach could be [[spoiler:Bowser Jr's mother]] is beyond gross.

* ReplacementScrappy: Bowser Jr. [[AndTheFandomRejoiced Until]] ''NewSuperMarioBrosWii''.

* BadassDecay: Going from energetic fistfighting to squirting enemies with F.L.U.D.D. struck many as Mario going through this.
