* HarpoDoesSomethingFunny: A non-comedic variant. During Ma and Jack's alley fight scene, significant portions of the fight were left unscripted to allow for improv, with the two actors legitimately trying to hit each other.

* SignatureScene: The film's LancerVsDragon fight between Ma and Jack, with both men graphically ripping beating the crap out of each other, which is easily the most talked-about moment in the entire film.

* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The wolf from the sequel. Sa sees it in her dreams and later encounters it in the forest during a dramatic moment, but it's never explained what it means or if there is some kind of symbolism.
* CompleteMonster: Both from the sequel:
** [[BigBad Hung Man-kong]], a ruthless crime lord who leads a crime syndicate [[TheHero Chan-chi Kit]] is sent to infiltrate, makes his fortune in a particularly nasty way: harvesting organs from those who are sent to a specific prison, with many people sacrificed this way. When he discovers he has an incurable disease and needs a heart transplant, he has no compunction trying to harvest his own brother's heart and even mocks him when he's begging for his life on the operating table. When this fails, Hung attempts to kill his brother himself to personally rip out his heart.
** [[WardensAreEvil Ko Chun]] is a major player in the crime syndicate and the warden of the prison where the organ harvesting victims are sent. Running the prison with an iron fist, Ko Chun has anyone who defies him beaten, tortured or killed regardless of whether or not they are destined to get their organs harvested. When one of the few honest guards tries to help the good guys, Ko Chun has him tortured and ends the film attempting to slaughter the heroes for interfering with how he runs his little kingdom.

* EvenBetterSequel: ''SPL II''. Even if it is a sequel in name only and is surrounded by debate about whether it really comes to the level of the first film, is considered a quite worthy sequel and very close in quality.

* LoveToHate: Ko Chun from the sequel. Why? He can fight 1 on 2, especially when he analyzed Kit's Kung Fu and Chatchai's Muay Thai, and counter not only their fighting styles, but also all of their crazy strategies! This final boss in a three-piece suit can kick so much ass!
* {{Narm}}:
** Lo's death from Jack, who just suddenly rushes from the side of the set like a maniac and stabs Lo in the stomach.
** The aforementioned wolf, due to the unsubtle CGI used.
* SpiritualAntithesis: While the first film [[spoiler:has an AntiVillain and kills the two protagonist characters]], the sequel [[spoiler:features a CompleteMonster and both the two protagonists survive.]]

* GenreTurningPoint: The film is renowned as the first martial arts film to successfully deal with the rising popularity of MMA, which meant that the average viewer would be far more knowledgeable than in the past of what real martial arts fighting looks like.
