* AnalogyBackfire: This troper thought that the point was to show two different interpretations of Hearth's Warming. While the Apples choose to make it a huge celebration, commemorating the formation of Equestria, the Pies (besides their obvious rock-orientedness) choose to have a moment of silence for how frugal and brutal it was for Earth ponies before then (it's heavily implied that the Earth ponies were seen as simple minded and good only for farming, in the last Hearth's Warming episode). To them, it's a day to remember how much they owe to the union of the three tribes. Hence, their lack of luxurious food (rock soup is a reference to stone soup, a soup made when everyone pitches in a bit of food), the hard to find presents (if Pinkie hid one on a moving train and Marble is indeed so good at Hide and Seek that you can't find her at all, imagine what kind of hiding spots they'd use), or even a flagpole isn't because they hate fun. It's intentional. However, the episode really doesn't delve into why the Pies celebrate as they do, or show what they think of the holiday, so it just looks like the Pies are boring ponies.
