* TheScrappy: Two-legged Motaro, considering it removed one of his most noticable traits.
** Daegon. He's considered a bland and boring villain who formed the Red Dragon just to kill his brother Taven.
** Taven also gets a lot of flack from the fanbase. Also a ReplacementScrappy for the already disliked Shujinko.
*** Though Taven is also something of a BaseBreakingCharacter as fans who like him feel that he was better conceived (as a HumanPopsicle in contrast to Shujinko's gullible IdiotHero) and thus was more justified in not understanding the new world he found himself in. His penchant for some snarky lines during Konquest Mode also helped.
** Meat, who was introduced in ''[=MK4=]'' as an oxymoronic skinless "skin" that can be put on any of the characters in that game, was considered undeserving of being included as part of the roster based on the fact that he was never an actual playable fighter in the first place. * VanillaProtagonist: Taven. We're supposed to focus on the titular battle royale between the entire cast. Yet the Konquest Mode is about him trying to stop said battle.

Shang being the one to deliver this blow is a reference to many fans' complaints that [[DittoFighter Shujinko]] is "basically Shang Tsung with better hair."

** In Kurtis Stryker's ending from this game while they [[NotUsingTheZWord refrain from calling him a superhero]] that more or less sums up what he becomes a super powered vigilante upon absorbing Blaze's power. Not just only would the [[VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse next game]] would be a crossover with the DC universe, but Creator/NetherrealmStudios would also make ''VideoGame/InjusticeGodsAmongUs''.

* SidetrackedByTheGoldSaucer: [[RacingMiniGame Motor Kombat]] is so well done for a minigame that you might end spending more time on it rather than on the main game.

In contrast to everyone else's ending in which they get to absorb Blaze's power upon his defeat, Hsu Hao gets killed in the explosion and turned into a mindless demon in the Netherrealm. A more subtle example is that his relic in that rather than being something that is iconic about the character (e.g. Scorpion's kunai and rope ("Spear") for Scorpion and Raiden's hat for Raiden) it's simply his watch.
* ThatOneBoss: The Shao Kahn Colossus statue in Konquest mode. He's completely invulnerable to your attacks, you can only cause damage to him by activating four orbs with your fire attack, and then lure the statue to the center of the room before hitting a switch with your Ground Stomp attack. Oh, and you can't avoid his attacks. No matter where you are in the room, you will always take damage.
