* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: The introduction of gliding, underwater, and kart customization were generally well-received, but after VideoGame/MarioKart8 and Deluxe came around with anti-gravity, larger rosters, more courses, and in the latter's case, a more varied Battle Mode, it can be difficult to go back to Mario Kart 7, which feels barebones by comparison. It also doesn't help that classic courses that were remade in 7 received further remakes in the Booster Course Pass of 8 Deluxe (Wii Coconut Mall, DS Waluigi Pinball, etc.), and that 8 Deluxe can also be played portably as a result of the Switch being a hybrid console.

** Rainbow Road is widely considered by many to be the best incarnation of the Rainbow Road stages, due to its 3 sectioned layout (instead of the typical 3 lap layout) giving it a sense of grandiose scale unseen in past versions, on top of the added variety offered by the moon and planets, the gorgeous visuals and its beautiful music. Unsurprisingly, it tends to be one of the tracks most picked by players in online and has reappeared in VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosForNintendo3DSAndWiiU, VideoGame/MarioKartTour, and VideoGame/MarioKart8, likely due to its popularity.

Trope misuse doesn’t explain how this was something present in previous games that got noticeably problematic over time.

** The Lucky 7 item. After you pick up this rare power-up from an Item Box, seven items start circling around the player's kart (much like Triple Shells do). The problem with this item is, because of its rareness, its unexpected and therefore a liability in the middle of a heated race. You can only use the spinning item you want when it's directly lined up in front of you. Spamming all items at once is frowned upon by other players, but what other choice do you have? If another player drifts into you, they are very likely to steal away your Star, Mushroom, Blooper, or setoff the Bob-omb by accident blowing you both up.

Just because a glitch that is abused by players exists doesn't make this course That One Level.

* ThatOneLevel: There was a notorious moment in the game's multiplayer community where griefers would all vote in unison for Maka Wuhu to make sure the random course select would be guaranteed to pick that track. And after Maka Wuhu was selected, they would then abuse an existing glitch on the track that allowed them to respawn at a farther distance down the course, effectively cheating their way to victory against the other players. After this glitch was discovered and patched out due to numerous complaints, the griefers then moved on to voting for Rainbow Road.

** The regular versus race mode, in which you can pick and race any courses in any order, was removed in this game. The only ways to do versus races are by playing multiplayer with others or by Streetpassing other players, and for the latter, you're only able to play the 4 courses they've selected for their cup.

** The traditional VS Race mode, which lets you pick and race any courses in any order, isn't available in single-player in this game. You can only do solo races outside the predetermined Cups by StreetPassing another owner of this game, and this only allows you to race on their personalized "[playername] Cup" (which contains their selection of four courses), behaving like a severely limited version of the VS mode.
