* JerkassWoobie: Precia in contrast to the original incarnation. She's still a cruel bitch of course, but you can feel bad for her too, especially since you often see her expressing emotions besides her typical cold disdain and occasional insane glee, like when she finds Alicia dead. She's even implied to [[spoiler:''regret'' what she did at the end]]. Since it is an in-universe biographical movie, the inconsistency is explained with Fate insisting on a more sympathetic portrayal of her.

** In fact, the story is quite a bit more gratuitously angsty in general. Fate doesn't recover from her HeroicBSOD in time to either team up with Nanoha or confront Precia, Chrono blames himself for the trauma that Nanoha and Fate went through, the general consensus among the Arthra's crew is that the jewel seed incident was a lost cause, and even freaking ''Raising Heart'' angsts when it thinks that it's given Nanoha faulty combat advice.

* EightPointEight: Carl Kimlinger's [[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/magical-girl-lyrical-nanoha/dvd-box-set review]] of the first series gave it a C-. Cue FlameWar, especially over whether his emphasis on the lolicon aspects of the series was justified.
* GrowingTheBeard: Arguably gets considerably better and more interesting after the first three episodes and first sound stage.
* MoralEventHorizon: Precia whipping Fate for not bringing enough Jewel Seeds back.
* NeverLiveItDown: Nanoha's [[DefeatMeansFriendship preferred method of making friends]], which was only played straight here with Fate. She never scores a decisive victory against any of the other former enemies she's befriended.
* TheWoobie: Fate.

She's even implied to [[spoiler:''regret'' what she did at the end]]. Since it is an in-universe biographical movie, the inconsistency is explained with Fate insisting on a more sympathetic portrayal of her.
* PanderingToTheBase: While Fate got a transformation, Nanoha's transformation was more fanservice-based and Bardiche and Raising Heart both got new looks, but there's a lot of information that ONLY fans of the series would know that didn't make it in the movie.
* {{Wangst}}: Nanoha is considerably more angsty in the movie manga, and some people believe she falls into this at times. For example, while at the end of the Jewel Seed case in the original anime, she was mostly satisfied with how things turned out but somewhat worried about Fate, she believes in the movie manga that she was unable to help anyone at all. This has lead to the FanNickname "Emoha" for this version of Nanoha.
* TheWoobie: Linith. Her plight is even more poignant in the movie manga, as she reveals that she wanted to take Fate and Arf away from Precia, but knew that doing so would hurt her, and realized that Precia and by extension, herself as Precia’s familiar had no more than two years to live. She thus did her best to ensure that Fate became strong and had a good relationship with Precia, and told Fate that she hoped she would find a good friend.

!!![=YMMVs=] for the franchise as a whole: [-(for specific ones go to the corresponding season's YMMV page)-]
* BetterThanItSounds: Try explaining this series to someone as a recommendation. Most will be put off by the MagicalGirl aspect already.
* BrokenBase: With the exception of ''[[NanohaAs A's]]'', which is considered an EvenBetterSequel, pretty much any other entry into the main continuity has left the fandom polarised. It doesn't help that the author is constantly tinkering with the established formula in very unsubtle ways.
** ''StrikerS'' caught flak for having a 10 year timeskip, thus losing most of the lolis. It moved the setting away from Earth and shifted focus from the previous main characters, ([[DemotedToExtra demoting several to extras]] in the process), to a bunch of rookies. It was also twice as long as previous seasons, with a lot of screen time devoted to training and discussions of military policies. The Numbers cyborgs probably got the most heated debates as to whether they were credible antagonists compared to the very powerful (and better developed) rivals from seasons one and two.
** ''SoundStageX'' was basically a continuation of ''StrikerS''... with no characters introduced before that season making any appearances. People who were not fans of the new characters did not take it well.
** ''ViVid'' was the first instalment to shift from anime to manga, and a monthly one at that, so it already had a strike against it before it even started. Then it turned out it was a LighterAndSofter take on the series with [[EverythingsBetterWithPlushies plushy devices]], no interdimensional incidents, MagicalGirl tropes ''played straight'' and more lolis than ever. It actually reads more like a shonen series with magical girls... and no antagonist so far. People who liked the changes in ''[=StrikerS=]'' were disappointed, but in Japan where {{moe}} is the law it's the most successful entry in the franchise yet.
** And then there's ''[[NanohaForce Force]]''. If ''StrikerS'' broke the base, than ''Force'' Starlight Breakered what was left of it. Running concurrently with ''ViVid'', it went completely the other way, all but ensuring that fans of one series hated the other and vice versa. It dropped most magical girl tropes altogether, introduced a bunch of new characters yet again, including an angsty ''male'' lead, which was the last thing anyone expected. It only keeps getting DarkerAndEdgier - innocent people are dying in bloody ways, antagonists are killing indiscriminately for fun, fan-favourite characters are being {{curb stomp|Battle}}ed left and right with powers that seem more than [[StoryBreakerPower a little broken]] and the [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=503564 weapons]] [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=473048 and]] [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=534857 armor]] [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=465206 designs]] [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=455604 are]] [[http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=442117 now]] approaching ''{{Warhammer 40000}}'' levels of batshit insane. People think it's either the most [[SoCoolItsAwesome awesome thing ever]] or a DorkAge that [[FanonDiscontinuity never happened]].
* CargoShip: Raising Heart/Bardiche.
* HilariousInHindsight: Would you believe [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_RBghAfiW8 this]] was the prototype for the series. If you've watched the show for any length of time, the sight of Nanoha waving around that puny heart-shaped wand alone will be enough to make you crack up.
* JustHereForGodzilla: Subverted. Before the first season's GrowingTheBeard moment, viewers were expected to just be there to see cute little Nanoha from ''TriangleHeart3SweetSongsForever'' in a strange alternate universe. They were quickly disproven when ''Nanoha'' got more viewers than the ''Triangle Heart 3'' OVA. Ever since ''Nanoha'' became the perfect example of MorePopularSpinoff, to the point where anyone looking for ''Triangle Heart 3'' is probably just there to see Nanoha in a strange alternate universe.
* MemeticMutation / {{Fanon}}:
** BloodKnight / HeroicSociopath: Nanoha's in-story enthusiasm for magical combat tends to be exaggerated into outright bloodthirstiness by fans. All the "White Devil" [[http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4813/nanoha2.jpg fanart]] where Nanoha is drawn as an AxCrazy StepfordSmiler and MemeticMolester of Fate.
** {{Yangire}}: Due to her whole DefeatMeansFriendship shtick, MemeticMutation has resulted in Nanoha being turned into this.
* MorePopularSpinoff: Of ''TriangleHeart''.
* {{Narm}}: The GratuitousEnglish the Devices use isn't always appropriate in dramatic moments, especially when they speak more than a single phrase or attack name.
* PeripheryHatedom: To haters of all things {{moe}}, this show has a big bright target painted on it. [[AnimeNewsNetwork Carl Kimlinger, I'm looking at you.]]
* ValuesDissonance: The TSAB makes ample use of grade-school children as [[strike: soldiers]] police officers. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that ''every single child to ever appear in the series'' is WiseBeyondTheirYears and [[RedShirtArmy the vast majority of the TSAB's mages]] are adults, but it still rubs some people the wrong way.

* CompleteMonster:
** Precia. She wasn't one at the beginning of the story itself, but she ''is'' when we see her first on-screen. Heck, the woman crosses the MoralEventHorizon in her EstablishingCharacterMoment. Slightly less so in the movie, which significantly increases her woobieness. [[spoiler:She's even implied to ''regret'' what she did at the end]].
** Quattro is also [[{{Understatement}} kind of a bitch]].
* ContestedSequel: ''[=StrikerS=]'' and ''FORCE''. ''[=ViVid=]'' would be too, if most people didn't consider it a SpinOff, rather than a true sequel.

** Cinque of the Numbers is fairly popular, despite only appearing in two episodes and being the only one absent from the final battle.
** Despite her incredibly minor status, Sette is starting to gain popularity in some fanfiction circles.
** Isis seems to have gotten quite a few fans so far, unlike pretty much anyone else introduced in ''Force''. Arnage also has some love, unlike almost all the other members of her Family.
* EpilepticTrees: Suzuka's sister Shinobu was a vampire in ''TriangleHeart3'', and apart from beating Fate at dodgeball, Suzuka and Alyssa both appeared inside a barrier that was supposed to keep {{muggles}} out. ''Hmmm...''

** Most notably, the ''White Devil'' for Nanoha, in reference to [[MobileSuitGundam Amuro Ray]].
** Also, ''[[PunnyName Ma-hou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha]]'' (Demonic Cannon Girl Lyrical Nanoha).
** The movie manga version has garnered the nickname "Emoha" for having her DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife origins exaggerated into flat out {{Wangst}}, and later believing that she failed to get through to Fate, rather than mainly being concerned about what punishment she will receive for her crimes.
** Signum Loveless, because of Signum's very similar personality to Lamia Loveless from ''SuperRobotWars''.
** GaoGaiGar-tan and [[spoiler:Lezbot]] for Subaru.
** Loli-Rider for Lutecia, because she looks like a loli version of Rider from ''FateStayNight''.
** Spaghetti for Jail Scaglietti, for no reason at all besides the pun.
** Etnagito for Agito, because she looks exactly like [[{{Disgaea}} Etna]].
** Arnage has been called [[MobileSuitGundamWing Heavyarms-tan]] due to the Reacted form of her Divider.

** ''[=StrikerS=]'' closed with the beginning of a mock battle in which the four forwards faced Nanoha, Fate, Vita and Signum, but none of it was shown.
* MoralEventHorizon: Precia whipping Fate for not bringing enough Jewel Seeds back.

* MostWonderfulSound: The cartridge loading sound.

* NeverLiveItDown: Two [[MemeticMutation memetic]] examples for Nanoha.
** First, of course, is [[DefeatMeansFriendship her preferred method of making friends]], which was only played straight once with Fate.
** Secondly, her BloodKnight reputation comes from her abortive [[strike: duel]] brawl [[http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/142341 with Signum.]][[hottip:*:Note that this is a coloured and enlarged, but otherwise completely unaltered panel from the canon ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga.]]
* PanderingToTheBase: TheMovie. While Fate got a transformation, Nanoha's transformation was more fanservice-based and Bardiche and Raising Heart both got new looks, there's a lot in the movie that fans of the series already know, and what's worse, a LOT of information that ONLY fans of the series would know that isn't in the movie.

* RuinedFOREVER: ''Force'' elicited this reaction for having a heterosexual male lead and supposedly dropping the magical girl tropes. Not to mention they put some of the most cheered characters this franchise have in real danger of suffering BadassDecay, starting with [[spoiler:[[LadyOfWar Signum]]]].
* TheScrappy:
** Cypha's caught a lot of flak for handing [[spoiler: Signum]] her first real defeat, and for being [[{{Understatement}} kind of a bitch about it]].
** Tohma has drawn fire for being a male main character with a potential heterosexual love interest.
* StrawManHasAPoint: Regius is one of the few people who distrusts Hayate for her criminal past, and even Auris suggests that he keep his opinions to himself. While the viewers and those close to her know she did nothing wrong during the Book of Darkness incident, he and much of the rest of the Bureau apparently heard a version of events in which Hayate accepted full responsibility, making his distrust seem more logical if ultimately incorrect.
* ThatOneAttack:

** Vita's Swallow Flier from the same game.
* TooCoolToLive: The original Reinforce.
* ToyShip: Erio and Caro.

* ViewerGenderConfusion:
** Otto. Female, for the record. This is compounded by her use of the masculine pronoun "[[JapanesePronouns boku]]".
** Until his profile came out, nearly everyone was convinced that Fortis was female. With his large eyes, dress-like robe, and feminine hairstyle, it's an easy mistake to make. Ironically, fortis can be translated from Latin as "manly".
* VoodooShark: The first season had a few minor plot points that were later RetConned. For example, in the original series Nanoha was the one who thought up Raising Heart's staff and cannon modes herself, but after season one all new devices have predetermined forms and require hardware upgrades for new ones. Naturally, when they remade the first season into a movie, they made sure it was consistent with the later seasons. However, this opened up a new PlotHole. While Raising Heart having its staff and cannon modes pre-loaded makes sense, it's never explained why Yuuno didn't try using either mode before handing the device over to Nanoha.
* TheWoobie:
** Fate in season one.
** Linith.
** Almost all the antagonists in season 2, but mostly Vita.
** Vivio during ''StrikerS''.

* BrokenBase: With the exception of ''[=A's=]'', which is considered an EvenBetterSequel, pretty much any other entry into the main continuity has left the fandom polarised. It doesn't help that the author is constantly tinkering with the established formula in very unsubtle ways.
** ''[=StrikerS=]'' caught flak for having a 10 year timeskip, thus losing most of the lolis.
** ''Sound Stage X'' was basically a continuation of ''[=StrikerS=]''... with no characters introduced before that season making any significant appearances. People who were not fans of the new characters did not take it well.
** ''[=ViVid=]'' was the first instalment to shift from anime to manga, and a monthly one at that, so it already had a strike against it before it even started.
** And then there's ''Force''. If ''[=StrikerS=]'' broke the base, than ''Force'' Starlight Breakered what was left of it. Running concurrently with ''[=ViVid=]'', it went completely the other way, all but ensuring that fans of one series hated the other and vice versa. While Fate got a transformation, Nanoha's transformation was more fanservice-based and Bardiche and Raising Heart both got new looks, there's a lot in the movie that fans of the series already know, and what's worse, a LOT of information that ONLY fans of the series would know that isn't in the movie. While Raising Heart having its staff and cannon modes pre-loaded makes sense, but then FridgeLogic sets in and makes you question why Yuuno didn't use either mode before handing the device over to Nanoha, since the movie doesn't go into any details about the hows and whys Yuuno couldn't use the device. Compare to the television series where Nanoha was the one who thought up the modes herself, which actually makes more sense as to why Yuuno didn't use those modes himself, he didn't think them up.
