* DiagnosedByTheAudience: A number of fans speculate that Noriaki Kakyoin is both autistic and depressed. Such readings hinge on his large knowledge of trivia, his high observance, his difficulties with socialization, his self-isolation as a result of his Stand (which is interpreted as allegorical for neurodivergence in this context), and a couple moments which parallel echolalia.

** J. Geil crossed it long before the story even started by raping and murdering Polnareff's sister.
** For the Joestar team at least, Steely Dan crossed it for his [[spoiler: merciless murder of Enya.]]
** Normally, animals have no sense of morality, but animals given intelligence due to Stand powers do. Case in point being [[FeatheredFiend Pet Shop]], who brutally rips apart two dogs in front of DIO's mansion and nearly kills their innocent owner as well, and [[ManiacMonkeys Forever]], who spies on and tries to rape an underage girl in the shower.
** Telence T. D'Arby is another one who crosses it before the events of the story, when he imprisons the souls of countless victims inside dolls that he keeps as still-living trophies. Making it even worse is how he not only plays dress-up with them (including the female dolls) and is shown suggestively fondling [[spoiler:Kakyoin's doll]], but also in how he enjoys seeing their minds break over time.
** Vanilla Ice crosses it after [[spoiler: he repeatedly kicks Iggy to death after Iggy made him destroy a sand replica of DIO. Keep in mind that he had only killed Avdol before he did this; and in the OVA, he sadistically mocks Avdol's sacrifice as well before trying to kill a wounded Polnareff.]]
** DIO already crossed it in ''Phantom Blood'' when he [[spoiler:[[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals tortured and burned Danny alive]] and [[ForTheEvulz zombified a mother to make her devour her own still-living baby]], among other crimes]], but for the Joestar Group, he passed it by driving Senator Phillips insane and forcing him to run down everyone on the street with a car for fun. Then to top it off, he [[spoiler:murders Kakyoin and, temporarily, Joseph; in the case of the latter, mocking his desecration in front of his grandson]], not long after.

This example basically says "Characters don't use the internet in a story written and set before the internet was available."

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The series takes place in the then-current year of 1989, the same year of the manga’s release. As such it features your typical late 80s technology and fashion. Notably, there's also a scene early on where Avdol needs to identify a fly's species, and uses the Kujo family's library to find an encyclopedia to look it up. These days a quick Google search would get him the information he wants.

** Anne the Runaway Girl is given little to do in the story other than being TheLoad and actively dragging the heroes down before quickly being sent back home by Joseph. This one has an explanation, as Araki eventually revealed that he had very different plans for her, originally intending for her to be a long-term ally who would actively participate in fights like the rest of the heroes, but was forced to shelve her due to sexist attitudes in the 1980s forbiddin him from writing female combatants, much like with Lisa Lisa in ''Battle Tendency''.

Iggy is not a Replacement Scrappy. He's an extremely popular character, and he's also not really a replacement for Kakyoin. I'm not sure if the Rescued From The Scrappy Heap example is even valid either, but I'll ask around a bit more before removing it. Brought up here.

* ReplacementScrappy: While the fights against Pet Shop and Vanilla Ice eventually have him RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap, Iggy can be seen as this for most of the Egypt Arc in place of Kakyoin. While he was a tad OutOfFocus for most of the Tarot Arc, Kakyoin was a rather complex character for the [[MonsterOfTheWeek Stand of the Week]] formula, serving as a StraightMan to Polnareff's antics and being an empathetic loner that genuinely wants to help those close to him. In the exact same story arc that introduces Iggy, though, Kakyoin gets blinded and administered to the hospital, so the story is now PassingTheTorch to Iggy. Problem is, while Kakyoin was TheHeart of the group, Iggy is... to put it nicely, a {{Jerkass}}. Most he does is cause trouble for the Crusaders, ''especially'' Polnareff by chewing his hair and [[ToiletHumour farting in his face]], clearly not showing any care for the battle against DIO, and any help he ''does'' do prior to the battle against Pet Shop was indirect, such as his crude acts causing the Crusaders to spit out their poisoned tea, or attacking Boingo [[DisproportionateRetribution because he accidentally hit Iggy]].
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Most fans experiencing ''Stardust Crusaders'' for the first time often find [[TeamPet Iggy]] to be a nuisance, contributing [[TheLoad extremely little]] after his introduction fighting N'Doul and being a [[ReplacementScrappy lesser replacement]] for Kakyoin. Thankfully, the fights against [[PraetorianGuard Pet Shop]] and [[HeroKiller Vanilla Ice]] ended up redeeming Iggy in the eyes of most of his detractors, as the former allowed him to prove his worth in battle, and the latter brought out his [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold hidden caring side]] through trying to protect Polnareff.

** Some fans have speculated that Jotaro is autistic, going off of how socially inept he was during his introduction as well as in later parts, as well as his official description pointing out that he acts like TheStoic because he mistakenly assumes everyone else can figure out how he's feeling.
** There are also some fans who believe that, based on actions taken in later story arcs, Jotaro suffers from noise-induced hearing loss on his right ear as a result of firing a gun at his ear at point blank range, averting the SteelEarDrums trope.

** This part as a whole has gotten this reaction over the years. When it was first serialized and introduced to the United States market, it was praised for its introduction of Stands, the sheer insanity of most of the battles, and the epic final fight with DIO. New fans, however, don't get the hype behind this part, since the MonsterOfTheWeek format gets old after a while, and the fact that the other Stand-based parts improved on this one greatly. It's also notoriously slow pacingwise, making it harder to watch compared to other arcs simply because each encounter is given a lengthy amount of screentime. Oftentimes, people will suggest skipping some fights, as they add nothing of value and simply are {{Padding}}, with Arabia Fats, ZZ, Devo the Cursed, and Mannish Boy in particular being skipped due to being the least impactful fights in the story.

However, the other half of the fanbase find his [[TheStoic stoic]] personality boring, [[NinetiesAntiHero outdated]], think thinks he wins fights a little too easily, and believe that, at times, he can be [[{{Jerkass}} just plain unlikable]]. It doesn't help that, due to ''Stardust Crusaders'' being the series' most recognizable part, [[WolverinePublicity Jotaro is almost always guaranteed to appear more often than any of the other protagonists]].
protagonists]]. However, he was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap for many in later parts.
** Although he definitely has a large fanbase, Jean-Pierre Polnareff is probably one of the most controversial heroes of the series due to being the only main character with a story arc in a very [[VillainOfTheWeek episodic part]] and for appearing almost as many times as Jotaro, if not more. Many fans find Polnareff a very endearing character whose search for his sister's killer makes him an IronWoobie of the highest calibre, find his ButtMonkey antics very amusing, and enjoy his fights. Some, however, think that he takes up [[SpotlightStealingSquad far too much screen time,]] with many wishing that less time could be spent on him and more on Kakyoin and Avdol. Despite this, no one really outright ''hates'' Polnareff, it's just that people wish he didn't have so much screen time.

Before the anime existed, a Flash animation called [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdJtfVrIMCI "Mudah.swf"]], in which stick figures reenact attacks from the video games, including the throwing knives and road roller, was many a Westerner's very first impression of ''[=JoJo=]'', helping the scenes become extra-memorable.

** The fight against Arabia Fats and his Stand, the Sun, is widely considered one of the worst fights in not only ''Stardust Crusaders'', which has been criticized for some of its rather uninteresting MonsterOfTheWeek fights, but the series as a whole due to how [[PlotIrrelevantVillain unnecessary]] and [[ArcFatigue boring]] it is. Not helping matters is that the fight is [[AntiClimaxBoss quickly resolved with little issue]], ultimately resulting in Arabia Fats having no personality to speak of, which fans have [[NeverLiveItDown not let gone unnoticed]].

** The original [=OVAs=] released in 1991 and 2000. Especially with the anime that aired in 2014, a lot of fans are left to debate over whether or not they still have a place in history or are expendable. Starting InMediasRes, cutting out many of the VillainOfTheWeek fights, and [[DarkerAndEdgier the more serious tone]] did not go over well with some fans. However, the [=OVAs=] did have a few accolades, such as cutting out some of the less important fights, how Daniel D'Arby and DIO's battles were handled, and the involvement of Creator/SatoshiKon.

* SoBadItsGood: The OVA's English dub suffers from stiff, cheesy line deliveries and poor casting -- several actors have similar voices which often don't fit their character.[[note]]To be fair, many would point these criticisms at the Japanese cast as well[[/note]] However, in spite of all of its faults, many have felt that the dub comes off as unintentionally hilarious; although a lot of viewers consider DIO's OVA dub to be pretty decent, as well as those of Hol Horse and Daniel D'Arby.

As a creepy ChildHater who [[FountainOfYouth turns his victims into kids]] before [[WouldHurtAChild attempting to murder them with an axe]] and who lacks any redeeming qualities, he is definitely intended to be a HateSink. However, the fight against him is too full of uncomfortable and {{Squick}}y moments (mainly thanks to Polnareff spending most of it as a naked kid) to be enjoyable for most people, so he fails to garner the LoveToHate reaction that such a character is supposed to elicit during the brief time he's there. Thankfully, Alessi is also a PlotIrrelevantVillain who's entirely contained within a single story arc, so those who can't stand him can easily skip over him without missing anything. With all this in mind however, his eventual defeat is ''extremely'' satisfying and hilarious.
