* GameBreaker: In Warzone, "The Answer" and the "Whiplash" are widely considered to be this; the former is a SAW variant that fires ''explosive'' rounds capable of quickly shredding apart even ''tanks'', and the latter is a Railgun with a fast charge time, ''two'' shots per magazine, ''and'' proximity airburst rounds (meaning that even a near miss will usually result in the target dying from the resulting explosion). To top it off, "The Answer" is "only" a Rare REQ (not Ultra Rare or Legendary), with many considering its requirement of six energy levels to use to still be way too low, while the "Whiplash" is an Uncommon that only requires ''four'' energy levels (though 343i later slightly nerfed the latter by reducing the total amount of ammo it could carry).

** Some of the cutscenes and exposition come off as a bit clunky, such as the end of the second campaign mission where Halsey and Lasky are discussing the imminent dangers of [[spoiler:a BackFromTheDead Cortana]] and Roland has to pull a WhatTheHellHero on them for prepping for the worst. What should be an ArmorPiercingQuestion ends up being the last thing said with no accompanying music or audio as the scene fades to black, as if the script literally ran out the ink after such an important moment, and [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment it's never brought up again.]]

** The conflict with Chief and Locke is trumped up to a huge degree in the trailers, and seems to be the entire thrust of the game. In fact, Master Chief's conflict with the UNSC, and his origins as a ChildSoldier who has essentially always been a soldier following orders, could have made for a very compelling narrative. Instead, Locke and Chief very briefly tussle in a cut scene and [[AntiClimax make up without a word later]], with that part of the game taking backseat to [[spoiler: Cortana.]]
*** Also, with two groups of [=SPARTANs=] around, anyone waiting for the moment when both fireteams joined forces and struck out to fight aliens (and [[MemeticMutation doesn't afraid of anything]]) together in a playable segment was likely left wanting.
*** With the Chief and Locke's feud [[EasilyForgiven easily resolved]], it also wastes an opportunity that no other Halo campaign would have had, ''fighting other Spartans''. How crazy would it have been to be forced to fight enemies that were [[CoolVersusAwesome as tough, fast, and smart as you are]]?

In fact, Master Chief's conflict game, with the UNSC, and big motivator seeming being Chief going rogue in his origins quest to find Cortana again marking him as a ChildSoldier who has essentially always been a soldier following orders, could have made for a very compelling narrative. an enemy to the UNSC. ** In a much more minor, yet amusing, instance, [[spoiler: many fans were more interested in seeing Master Chief reunite with [[FireForgedFriends Arbiter]] than [[ParentalSubstitute Dr. Halsey]] in the final cutscene.]]

** In the E3 2013 reveal trailer, Chief is shown wearing a cloak over his MJOLNIR armor. Given how resilient the armor is described as being in the series, the cloak seems rather unnecessary, and seems to have been added by 343 simply to create a sense of mystery in the trailer.

Given how much the fantasy style garment clashed with Chief's 26th century PoweredArmor, not to mentioned how unnecessary it would be given resilient the armor is described as being in the series, the cloak seems rather unnecessary, and is, it seems to have been added by 343 simply to create a sense of mystery in the trailer.

Loads And Loads Of Characters is no longer a trope

* ContestedSequel: A lot of the gameplay changes were welcomed by the fanbase, as they placed emphasis on being a SuperSoldier in PoweredArmor while still maintaining CompetitiveBalance. Multiplayer was very popular for that reason, as regular updates with maps and gametypes gave more play value over a long period of time. The main campaign, on the other hand, was very divisive as the four player co-op stunted the OneManArmy feel and gave LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters that didn't contribute much to the story, to say nothing of [[spoiler: Cortana becoming the BigBad of the franchise]].

* ContinuityLockout: The previous games never really explored the full history of the Spartan SuperSoldier program, leaving it to expanded media like ''Literature/HaloTheFallOfReach'', and they treated Master Chief as the LastOfHisKind (outside of some easily missed dialogue in ''VideoGame/Halo4''). The expanded works did reveal that some other Spartan-[=IIs=] survived, but Blue Team and their long relationship with Master Chief is treated as established information to the player when this is actually the first time the games have directly featured them.

Only applies to the work made this, not the work causing it. Except if the work doesn't have a trope page or count as a work.

** A certain line from ''2'''s "Delta Halo" mission stands out a lot now. [[spoiler:"If I were a megalomaniac..."]]
*** What's best about said line is that it's a throwback to the original script for ''Combat Evolved'', which had [[spoiler:Cortana go crazy with the power of the Halo and become the BigBad]]. So it's a CallBack ''and'' a retroactive CallForward.
*** Then there's ''this'' line by [[spoiler:Cortana]]: [[spoiler:"Unfortunately for us both, I like crazy."]]
** The line [[spoiler: "I'm not doing this for mankind"]] in ''Halo 4'' that revealed how much [[spoiler: Cortana]] cared about Master Chief takes on a darker light when it's revealed how callous [[spoiler: Cortana]] is about humans not named John-117.

About fans praising so highly general audiences don't think they measure up.

* HypeBacklash: Jul 'Mdama was introduced in the novels before becoming the face of the Covenant Remnant faction in Halo 4's "Spartan Ops" ongoing story. If all you did was play the games there isn't much to latch on to with the character before being killed at the end of the first level of Halo 5 but his prominence in the expanded universe made many believe he was to ascend to at least a DragonWithAnAgenda, if not BigBad. An implied TroubledProduction with "Spartan Ops" did truncate that storyline, but with more perspective it became evident 'Mdama was never intended to be more than an annoyance to be discarded as worse villains took shape.
