** Whedon has said the show was a sci fi take on the Confederacy after their loss. However in the show itself the Alliance has legalized slavery over a decade after the Unification War Shindig's opener has a man encouraging Mal to traffic in slaves, and confirms that slaves are used for Terraforming crews by The Alliance, explicitly invaded a series of sovereign nations to enforce its will on them the ExpandedUniverse confirms that the Rim Worlds had no unified governments and had only ever collaborated for interplanetary mail deliveries, and is largely run entirely by megacorps The BigDamnMovie confirms that Blue Sun were behind the program that tortured River and similarly had the full backing of "the minds behind every operation in the galaxy" with a government made up exclusively of a senatorial parliament. Meanwhile in real life the US Confederacy noted in several of their individual articles of secession from the US that they were doing so because the Union had refused to allow them to invade northern states in pursuit of re-enslaving "escaped slaves" (or more realistically, enslaving random blacks) under the Fugitive Slave Acts, the US had passed the 13th Amendment banning slavery before the end of the Civil War itself The war officially ended May 1865, the Senate and House had ratified the 13th Amendment by January 1865, with the ratification by 27 of 36 states by December of 1865, and the Southern governments were largely run by nepotistic families with ties to the plantation "corporations" of the day. And the US Senate largely exists (along with the 3/5ths compromise) because Slave States were worried they'd lack the ability to overrule northern states due to the freemen population disparity. If anything, Firefly appears like a sci-fi take on a universe where the Confederacy won.

*** The scene where Crow gets introduced to Serenity's engine intake is likely to have this effect. A hero killing an unarmed, defeated villain for refusing an offer (and a little bit of mouthing off), can be shocking. Following that up by taking the next mook, planting him in the exact same spot, and starting to give him the same offer delivered in exactly the same tone, with said mook rushing to agree with the hero before he's even finished a sentence is pretty hilarious.

** Film/AlienResurrection, as pointed out by Michael Marano in the essay River Tam and the Weaponized Women of the Whedonverse. Firefly and Resurrection share many character archetypes and plot elements (notably the "Weaponized Woman" in the form of Clone Ripley and River Tam). It's evident that Joss Whedon had his work on Resurrection in the back of his mind while he was working on this series.

Inara is canonically bisexual and is close friends with Kaylee, a TomboyWithAGirlyStreak who is often curious about Inara's business as a Companion, and there's a rather intimate, though platonic, scene of Inara brushing Kaylee's hair in "The Train Job" with her Companion leitmotif playing over it.

If it's deliberate, it's Homoerotic Subtext. Ho Yay is about fan interpretations. Les Yay is also a redirect to Ho Yay so I combined them.

*** Niska is an awful person through and through, but you can't help chuckling when he grumbles resignedly about how he's going to get an earful from his wife at dinner for killing her nephew (the upside-down corpse he showed Mal as a warning not to screw with him).

** According to Creator/AdamBaldwin, there would have been deliberate HoYay between Simon and Jayne if the series had not been canceled. Creator/SeanMaher also stated in a convention interview that he believed Simon had a crush on Jayne, something that would likely have been used in a future storyline.
