* CompleteMonster: [[ProfessionalKiller Tao Pai Pai]] from the "[[Recap/DragonBallRedRibbonArmyArc Red Ribbon Army Arc]]" is a PsychoForHire who cares only about profit and ruthlessly and remorselessly wipes out anyone who gets in his way with his bare hands. After he murders Upa's father and defeats Goku in battle, he laughs at Upa and tells him that he's lucky that he's still alive, meaning that he has absolutely no problem killing children. One of his worst offenses has got to be when he forced a tailor to overwork on making an outfit for him in about three days...which he rewarded by killing him. When he returns to Karin's Tower to look for the one Dragon Ball he neglected to find, he grabs Upa and throws him against the tower (fortunately, he was saved by Goku). After his defeat, he was rebuilt into an AxCrazy cyborg who wanted nothing more than the deaths of both Goku and Tenshinhan. He's arguably the KnightOfCerebus for the series. While the Z Fighters heavily outmatch him in ''Dragon Ball Z'', he still has no redeeming qualities.

** The general perception of Pan in ''Dragon Ball GT'' by several fans. In addition to blaming her for the failure of ''GT'', she is reviled by several fans for acting spoiled and immature, and not being as powerful as the other main characters. Yet arguably Pan's behavior is a toned-down version of Trunks and Goten's behavior when they were children and yet neither one has faced condemnation from the fanbase because of their attitude and actions. And WordOfGod has stated that Pan never went Super-Saiyan because at the time he didn't know how to draw a female Super-Saiyan. Pan isn't that much different from the other characters, and yet she is reviled by the fanbase for personality traits that other characters have but they don't face the same level of derision that she does.

** These days, Yamcha's mostly known for dying a lot despite only dying twice(the same amount as Goku) in a series where DeathIsCheap. Most people forget that when he was first introduced in the series, he actually almost defeated Goku in battle. The only thing preventing him from the finishing blow so was that Bulma happened to wake up at that time, and Yamcha left because of his [[WeaksauceWeakness crippling fear of pretty girls]]. He was also the first person to use a KI technique and ended up saving everyone from Goku's Great Ape form at the end of the story arc.

** It doesn't help, though, that when Bulma first meets Mr. Popo she blurts out "Doesn't he look a little dangerous?" Of course, it might just have been culture shock from the fact that he arrived on a magic carpet, but still. Of course, in the manga Bulma then claimed (as Bulma usually does) that Mr Popo was going to take her to a remote setting so that people can't see what he does to her. Officer Black, despite the design, fares better, as he's portrayed as actually far more competant than his boss, Commander Red.

The fact that it became popular in those territories ''way earlier'' than in the US, definitely helped.[[note]]Although the anime was released in the US in 1989 (around the same time as Europe and Latin America) it took a whole decade and several re-releases for it to really catch up in the early 2000s. By that time, in Europe and Latin America ''Dragon Ball'' had been a ''massive'' juggernaut for years.[[/note]]
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Commander Red is voiced by KenjiUtsumi in the Japanese version, and desires to become taller. Utsumi later voices a Stalinist rogue GRU Colonel, yet later ends up defeated by someone who looks a heck of a lot like a tall version of Commander Red in ''[[VideoGame/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater Metal Gear Solid 3]]''.
** The scene where Pilaf blows a kiss to Bulma in the Pilaf Saga becomes hilarious when his Japanese voice actor, ShigeruChiba, ends up voicing [[DissidiaFinalFantasy another silly villain]] who has a huge amount of FoeYay[=/=]somewhat {{Yandere}}-esque traits towards his nemesis. Bonus points for the fact that the villain's nemesis, [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Terra Branford]], has an alternate costume that gives her a slightly similar appearance to Bulma.[[note]]In case anyone's curious, the alternate costume was based on her field sprite in her original game.[[/note]]
* HoYay: [[HoYay/DragonBall Has its own page.]]
* ItsPopularNowItSucks: There was once a time where fans of ''Dragon Ball'' could express their interest in the franchise in the open. However, it achieved popularity inside [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff and outside]] Japan. [[ValuesDissonance It may be different in South and Latin America as well as Latino-based boards]], but if you say you like any series (except for maybe the original ''Dragon Ball'') on English boards or in anime clubs? You'll be asked why or told how bad it is, if not flat-out [[FanHater insulted]].
** It should be noted that most of hate for the series was from the early to mid 2000s.
* JerkassWoobie: Mai and Shu, especially when they're being verbally and/or physically abused by Pilaf. Their status as {{Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain}}s also helps.
* MagnificentBastard: Also, Demon King Piccolo in the original ''Dragon Ball'' qualifies, and Vegeta shows some flashes of this in the Namek Saga where he does several meticulously villainous and underhanded things, but we enjoy seeing him do them anyway.
* MoralEventHorizon: In the original Dragon Ball, the Pilaf gang freeing Demon King Piccolo from the rice cooker he was imprisoned in. Before that they had never done anything especially bad (except try to kill Goku and friends and they were laughably incompetent at doing so anyway).
* RecycledScript: The ''Dragon Ball'' movies are all very loose adaptations of story arcs from the original manga and TV series. While the ''DBZ'' movies are more unique, they can be matched up to certain fights from the TV series as well.
** ''Curse of the Blood Rubies'' adapts the first Dragon Ball hunt, with the original character King Gurume substituting Emperor Pilaf as the ultimate antagonist.
** ''Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle'' starts off with a sub-plot involving Goku and Krillin being sent to find the titular Princess ([[spoiler:eventually revealed to be a precious diamond]]) for Master Roshi, just like when they were sent to find a cute girl for Roshi in the manga.
** ''Mystical Adventure'' combines the Red Ribbon Army and 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai arcs and puts them in an entirely different context.
** The ''Lord Slug'' movie matches the plot of the King Piccolo arc. An evil Namekian wishes for his youth and power. This one is painfully obvious.
** And the tenth anniversary movie ''Path to Power'' retells the first arc of the original ''Dragon Ball'', but with the Red Ribbon Army as the main antagonists.
* SequelDisplacement: ''Dragon Ball Z'' is much more popular than ''Dragon Ball'', in the West. Critically, the original is better received plot-wise.
* TearJerker: [[TearJerker/DragonBall Has its own page.]]
* UnfortunateImplications: The design of Mr. Popo and Officer Black and their large red lips.
*** It helps even less that, in the manga and in the Japanese version, Mr Popo's speech is rather primitive, with Mr Popo referring to himself constantly in the third person.
*** Officer Black was "corrected" in ''The Path to Power'', giving him a lighter complexion without differentiated lips. In fact, he looks more Hispanic than Black.
*** Also in the Red Ribbon Army is General Blue, a CampGay villain with pedophilic implications and a deep fear of even seeing a woman.
