* ValuesResonance: When Danny's father finds out Captain Lancaster is physically abusing the children in his class, he instantly goes PapaWolf:
-->I told him everything. He stood there holding my [hand], his face looking angrier and angrier, and I could see the fury beginning to boil up dangerously inside him.\\
''"I’ll kill him!"'' he softly whispered when I had finished. "I swear I’ll kill him!" His eyes were blazing, and he was trembling all over. I had never seen him look like that before.\\
"Forget it, Dad."\\
"I will not forget it!" he said.
** Keep in mind that CorporalPunishment was not seen as abusive ''per se'' in that time, as it is now - so while William's [[WouldNotHurtAChild outrage at]] the violation of a child's bodily integrity resonates with audiences today, he's likely quite the exception in the setting, and was still someone unusual for quite some time.

* FairForItsDay: Poaching pheasants off the wealthy, as Danny's father explains to his son, was a necessary evil as people were so poverty stricken during the Depression, they either had to steal birds or starve to death.

** Mr Snoddy, who has been driven to drink by his wife's constant abuse, isn't given so much as a second thought. Then again, the story takes place from the point of view of 9 year old Danny, who ''wouldn't'' give it much, if any, thought. Okay, [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale modern adult readers might not care either]], sadly.

*** There’s also the fact that he’s drinking during school hours. Danny’s father thinks it’s justified given his unhappy marriage, but nowadays a school employee drinking on the job for whatever reason would be fired in a heartbeat.

** Consistent use of The book consistently uses "Gypsy" (which was not considered a slur back when it was written, unlike now) instead of the more appropriate "Roma".

* FridgeHorror: Wouldn't the amount of sedatives it takes to sedate a grown person actually be able to ''kill'' a pheasant? This can be slightly averted by it being diluted, but it's honestly amazing at least one or two of the pheasants didn't die of an overdose.
** Um... it's stated, on page, that at least six of them did, were found by Doctor Spencer, cooked and eaten. Which was part of the point of the whole exercise. Nothing particularly fridge or particularly horror here.
* SweetDreamsFuel

Darker And Edgier is not YMMV.

* DarkerAndEdgier: This story is aimed at older readers than the kind of output Dhal is better known for and introduces a lot of shades of grey into its morality. The protagonists are basically good people but what they are doing is definitely not legal. There is one teacher who is a borderline CompleteMonster but it's portrayed far more realistically (insisting on being referred to by rank and dishing out unwarranted capital punishment instead of trying to eat kids or the other kinds of extremes Dhal villains are more known for, etc). There are other characters who are basically good but flawed (such as Mr. Snoddy who is well liked and respected by his pupils but is also revealed to be TheAlcoholic due to spousal abuse), and other authority figures are treated as targets for mockery (such as the policeman and his weird way of inserting H sounds where they don't belong and omitting them where they should go -- "'Ello, Hwats going hon 'ere thenh?").

*** But then, the story takes place from the point of view of 9 year old Danny, who ''wouldn't'' give it much, if any, thought.
