* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotforKids: If you judge the game based off of its publicized content, then it's very easy to mistake this game as a children's title. Although the game does feature two [[KidHero kid heroes]] wandering around a fantasy world while on misadventures, this game is ''not'' appropriate for younger kids. The game features quite a bit of blood, onscreen death, and nightmarish sequences throughout the game. In fact the whole reason why the boys are on their journey is because their father is ''dying''. Yet despite the "T" rating, this game received nominations for best ''family'' game.

* SpiritualLicensee: The game sometimes feel like adaptation of ''Literature/TheBrothersLionheart'' by Creator/AstridLindgren. Given the fact that the game's developer, Starbreeze Studios, is Swedish, it's probably intentional.

** At least none of the giant corpses attack or try to harm the player. No, the part where the game first takes a really dark turn [[DontGoInTheWoods is the forest.]] Its night and the boys are introduced sitting in front of a fire when wolves with eerie glowing eyes show up and will gladly devour either brother if given the smallest chance. As if that wasn't bad enough they also come across a few corpses hanging from the trees while escaping the wolves. How did they get there and why? [[NothingIsScarier The game doesn't say.]] Oh, and just when it looks like the brothers are finally almost out of the woods the [[WhenTreesAttack trees themselves try to kill them.]]

* GuideDangIt: It can take a bit to realize you need to use [[spoiler: the older brother's action key to make the younger brother swim]]
** This is the most cathartic moment of the game; the usual [[spoiler:"press button to do X" cue]] would diminish the effect.

* TearJerker: This game does an exceptional job of tearing your heart out. It begins on a sad note with the youngest brother visiting the grave of their mother, who drowned to death. From there, [[FromBadToWorse it gets worse.]]
** One of the optional challenges in the game involve rescuing a man whose family perished in a house fire from committing suicide.
** The boys also rescue a badly-injured griffon from a cage. After giving them a short ride, the creature collapses. [[spoiler: It gets better, though.]]
** The biggest tear jerker of all comes at the end when [[spoiler: the oldest brother is fatally wounded by a [[SpiderPeople spider girl]] just before reaching their end goal. The youngest brother is forced to bury him and return home by himself.]]
*** Even worse is the fact that [[spoiler: YOU have to do it. You have to drag the older brother into his grave and push dirt piles on top of him. It's gutwrenching.]]
*** Before that, [[spoiler: even though she tried to kill the brothers, finishing the spider lady off is no picnic, as half-way into the fight, she stops attacking and begins moaning in agony and struggling to get away]]
*** [[spoiler:Tried to kill? She DOES kill the order brother and the last part of the level has the younger supporting him and trying his damnedest to save him... all in vain. The game really really twists the knife by making the player believe its not too late and that getting the water will save him. Unfortunately, the older brother is too far gone when he returns... dead from blood loss. That alone would be bad enough, but [[FridgeHorror the cutscene at the beginning of the game adds a nasty bit of insight into this scene.]] The younger brother watched his mother drown right before him and became afraid of water as a result, unable to do anything but helplessly watch her die. Thanks to the spider girl he got to watch his older brother die right in front of his eyes as well, once again being completely unable to prevent it. God only knows if he'll ever be able to truly forgive himself or suffer from a crippling fear of spiders for the rest of his life.]]

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: The man at the beginning of the game, who prevents the brothers from crossing the bridge and pursues them thru the village, creating obstacles for them; you get rid of him by releasing a puppy from the dog pen, which proceeds to chase him when he runs away in panic. So far, so funny, as the game probably makes you consider the man a bully and the brother's actions their way of standing up to him. But once the brothers get out of the dog pen the scene takes a darker turn: they discover the man cowering and whimpering on top of a barrel in a corner, visibly completely *terrified* of the puppy. At this point you may begin to view the entire situation in a different light: possibility arises that the man is not a bully but instead mentally challenged and extremely cynophobic and has been just trying to play with the brothers instead of bully them. What makes it even worse is that brothers can interact with the scene: by pointing and laughing.
